Six locations with personal stories.&nbsp; Each outdoor exhibition focuses on personal stories of residents of that location, told through images, text and historical sources. Visitors are taken into the dilemmas that residents faced during wartime and have the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of freedom and choices today.Opening on 10 April 2025 The official opening of Freedom of Choice will take place on 10 April 2025. All six locations will be opened that day, starting in Tiel. During this opening, speakers, relatives and those involved will put the stories of the time into perspective. The exhibition covers the period from the mid-17th century, when a sandbank known as the Western Bank formed at the mouth of the Vistula River, to mid-1941, when the Westerplatte branch of the German Stutthof concentration camp for civilian prisoners was closed.The location of the exhibition is not coincidental – it is the historic former Power Plant building of the Polish Military Transit Depot, renovated and arranged for exhibition purposes. The exhibition features the archaeological discoveries related to the site, the everyday life of the depot, the difficult and responsible service of Polish soldiers in the face of growing hatred of the Germans towards Polish presence in the area of the Free City of Gdańsk, and the camp for Polish civilian prisoners set up by the Germans after the seven-day battle (1–7 September 1939). The curators aim to make visitors aware that Westerplatte is not only a peninsula heroically defended by a small unit of Polish soldiers, but also the site of German crimes against Polish civilians. The exhibition also intends to highlight the symbolic significance of Westerplatte as the place where the Second World War began.Start your visit at Westerplatte with the Visitor Centre [Centrum Obsługi Zwiedzających ‘Pole Bitwy Westerplatte’]. At the information desk, you will obtain information related to the history of Westerplatte. Assistance in planning the route, finding a guide and information will help discover the monuments in the area. The building overlooking the sea provides visitors with a rest stop. It is adapted for people with disabilities.

Exhibition ‘Memory buried beneath the surface. Archaeology of Westerplatte’

Het Rijnlandoffensief is bijzonder: nooit eerder werd vanaf Nederlands grondgebied een offensief ingezet van een dergelijke omvang. Het begon met moordende gevechten in het Reichswald. Na drie weken had het bos een rode gloed van al het bloed dat was gevloeid. Door de slechte weersomstandigheden, dooi en veel regen, zakten complete tanks weg in de modder. Binnen zes weken groeide de geallieerde troepenmacht in vervolgoperaties uit tot meer dan 1 miljoen soldaten. Alle registers werden opengetrokken: invasie, trommelvuur, man tot man gevechten, tankslagen, bombardementen, riviercrossings en luchtlandingen. Een pandemonium voor zowel de gewone soldaat als de burgerbevolking.&nbsp;In de meeste geschiedenisboeken wordt het Rijnlandoffensief niet of nauwelijks genoemd, terwijl het een gigantische en belangrijke operatie was. De spreker op 8 februari, René Schoenmaker, verdiepte zich in de operatie toen hij in 2001 in Nütterden ging wonen, op de locatie van de Siegfriedlinie. Schoenmaker is luitenant-kolonel b.d. en zette zich 43 jaar lang in voor vrede en veiligheid bij de Koninklijke Landmacht in binnen- en buitenland. Met vier missies in oorlogsgebieden is hij veteraan. In zijn laatste werkzame functie heeft hij veel kennis en ervaring opgedaan bij een NATO Rapid Deployment Corps bij 1GNC in Münster. Deze kennis zet hij (onder meer) in om het Rijnlandoffensief in het Vrijheidsmuseum onder de aandacht te brengen middels lezingen, rondleidingen en Battlefieldtours die dit jaar plaats vinden op zaterdag 28 februari (Duitstalig) en zaterdag 7 maart (Nederlandstalig). Naast de Nederlandstalige lezing op zondag 8 februari geeft hij ook een Duitstalige lezing op woensdag 11 februari.&nbsp;Op zondag 8 februari vindt de lezing plaats in het Vrijheidsmuseum. Inloop is vanaf 14:00 en om 14:30 begint het programma. Na de lezing is er ruimte voor vragen uit het publiek. Na afloop kunt u napraten in het café of nog kort het museum bezoeken. Om 17:00 sluit het museum. Tickets kosten € 9, - p.p. en zijn verkrijgbaar via de website. First exposed to a camera by working in front of it, Miller was one of the most sought-after models of the late 1920s. She quickly stepped behind the lens, becoming a leading figure in the avant-garde scenes in New York, Paris, London and Cairo.The exhibition will showcase Miller’s extraordinary career, from her participation in French surrealism to her fashion and war photography. Exploring her artistic collaborations, the exhibition will also shed light on lesser-known sides of her practice, such as her remarkable images of the Egyptian landscape in the 1930s.With around 250 vintage and modern prints, including those never previously displayed, the exhibition reveals Miller's poetic vision and fearless spirit.Determined to forge her own path, she later commented, ‘It was a matter of getting out on a damn limb and sawing it off behind you.’Lee Miller is supported by the Lee Miller Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate International Council, Tate Patrons, Tate Photography Acquisitions Committee, Tate Americas Foundation and Tate Members.Lee Miller is organised by Tate Britain in collaboration with the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago.
