After Overloon was captured, the battle for Venray to the south also became very tense. The battle at the Loobeek brook was so fierce that it was nicknamed ‘Bloedbeek’ (blood brook). The Allies liberated Venray on 18 October. The Battle of Overloon was over. It is estimated that more than a thousand soldiers died here. Many of them are buried in the British War Cemeteries in Overloon and Venray and the German War Cemetery in Ysselsteyn. The American casualties were buried at different locations.

Because the Germans expected an Allied attack in this region, on September 27, the order went out to evacuate the population immediately. Overloon and the villages to the east had to be evacuated within a few hours. The 3,000 evacuees sheltered in the small villages of Holthees, Maashees and Smakt.But on September 30, the British bombed Holthees. There were 12 deaths and many wounded, with extensive damage to homes and buildings. The inhabitants of Holthees and the evacuees were forced to move on towards Venray.

On the 17th, 18th and 19th of September, massive airdrops took place in the area between Best and Son. Thousands of American paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division and hundreds of gliders with military equipment landed there on their drop zones. The operation, known as Market Garden, aimed to capture a strip of land, called a corridor and seize and hold the roads and bridges. This would allow the XXXth British Corps to use it to advance to Arnhem.An American company attempted to capture the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, but failed. German soldiers blew up the bridge. But on the 19th of September, the Americans, with the help of British tanks, still achieved a victory. Then the 15th Scottish Division was tasked to secure the western part of the landing zone. Best also had to be liberated.It turned out not to be easy. The occupier had constructed heavy defences in Best. From the 21st of September, the troops of the Scottish Division were involved in continuous fighting in the city centre, near the railway line and the Vleut. Eventually, they managed to liberate Best on the 24th of October.

Fortress Best

Am 17. 18. und 19. September fanden groß angelegte Luftlandeoperationen zwischen Best und Son statt. Mehrere Tausend amerikanische Fallschirmjäger der 101. Airborne Division und mehrere Hundert mit Militärmaterial beladene Segelflugzeuge landen dort in ihrer Landezone. Diese ‚Market Garden’ Operation hatte zum Ziel einen Landstrich, den sogenannten Korridor, zu erobern und Straßen und Brücken zu besetzen und zu halten. Anschließend war es die Aufgabe der 15. schottischen Division die westliche Landezone zu sichern. Dazu gehörte auch die Befreiung von Best.Einfach war das allerdings nicht. Der Besatzer hatte schwere Verteidigungsstellungen in Best errichtet. Die Soldaten der schottischen Division mussten ab dem 21. September im Zentrum der Stadt, an der Bahnlinie und in ‚de Vleut’ ununterbrochen kämpfen. Schließlich konnten sie Best am 24. Oktober befreien. Two days after the liberation of Breda on 29 October 1944, elements of Major General Maczek's 1st Polish Armoured Division raced north; their objective was Moerdijk and the vital bridges there. However, before this could be achieved, the Cromwell tanks of the reconnaissance unit, 10 PSK, had to cross the River Mark. At Nieuwe Veer, just south of Moerdijk, they attempted to do so, but both the brand new road bridge and the railway bridge had been blown up. It was therefore decided to send the infantry, the 8th Battalion nicknamed the 'Blood Shirts', across the River Mark in boats. The result of this was the formation of a small bridgehead on 31 October.Polish bridgeheadThe opposing forces, the 245 Infantry Division of Lieutenant-General Sander, did not take long to respond, and soon German counterattacks followed one after another. The German response was so fierce because the road to Moerdijk had to be kept open as long as possible for the retreating troops. During the following night, reinforcements were brought in via floating bridges in the form of eight Sherman tanks and two M-10 Self Propelled Guns, and on 1 November the Polish forces managed to enlarge the bridgehead somewhat. However, the German troops launched a renewed counterattack and pushed them back again to near the Mark.RetreatOne Sherman tank after another was knocked out, and at 6pm the decision was taken to abandon the bridgehead. Around midnight, all Polish troops were back on the south bank of the Mark. The battle had been short but extraordinarily fierce, and Polish losses were considerable: 16 killed, 40 wounded and eight missing. Two days later, Maczek's troops successfully crossed the Mark canal near Ter Aalst, and on 9 November Moerdijk finally fell into Polish hands.

From its liberation in late October 1944 until spring 1945, the Brabant capital swarmed with Allied soldiers. While most of these were housed in large buildings, such as the teacher training college in Sint Josephstraat, hundreds of others were billeted with civilians. From early November 1944, Canadian troops stayed in the city. Shortly before Christmas, on 20 December, they left in a hurry, a move related to the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes. Their place was taken over by Polish troops until mid-January, after which the Canadians returned.Because of their departure to the south, the Canadian troops had to celebrate Christmas early. This was the case for the billeted soldiers at Bosch Bakery (today De Groot Bakery) in Van Noremborghstraat, where a field kitchen was also set up. The soldiers appreciated the normality and the civilians were grateful to the liberators. As a reminder of Christmas, photos were taken, sometimes with the text 'somewhere in Holland', purposefully kept vague so as not to make the observant enemy any wiser than necessary.'s-Hertogenbosch was a post-liberation 'leave centre', a place where allied soldiers could rest and recuperate after a period at the front. Some soldiers, including Canadians, translated this as 'love centre', and parents, educators and clergy were very concerned about the local girls' free association with the liberators. To overcome this problem, the clergy sometimes sent older 'girls' to dance parties, causing Canadian soldiers to grumble that they now had to dance with grandmothers instead of lovely girls their own age. Nevertheless, here and there relationships were formed, and in the Brabant capital there is a Dutch post-war saying, 'Trees has a Canadian'... (Trees is a Dutch name for a girl).

After the front in North Brabant stabilised, several training schools were set up in the area. The 4th Canadian Armoured Division's training school was set up in Huize Sint Felix in Udenhout. Sint Felix was ideal as it was a huge building, where the Sisters of Charity from Tilburg taught girls and cared for the sick and elderly. The building was named after the patron saint of its creator, parish priest Felix Cuijpers.Training coursesOn 7 December 1944, the Canadian troops moved into the building, which had sleeping quarters equipped for 60 soldiers. The lessons included practical elements, such as shooting with all kinds of weapons (in the Loonse and Drunense Dunes), tactical exercises, and theory, for example lessons on the German army. The course lasted two weeks, with the ultimate idea being to further improve the efficiency of the military. However, in practice the school ended up functioning simply as a refresher course.In March, the Canadian division left North Brabant to take part in the attack on Germany. The school remained in Udenhout until 28 April 1945, closing after ten courses. The residential building bears the name Felixhof, and the statue of Saint Felix, the lettering of the building, the angelus bell and the foundation stone have been incorporated into a monument as a lasting reminder. The monument was designed by local Udenhout artist, Frank van der Loo, and stands on the former site of the convent.

After the front in North Brabant stabilised, several training schools were set up in the area. The 4th Canadian Armoured Division's training school was set up in Huize Sint Felix in Udenhout. Sint Felix was ideal as it was a huge building, where the Sisters of Charity from Tilburg taught girls and cared for the sick and elderly. The building was named after the patron saint of its creator, parish priest Felix Cuijpers.Training coursesOn 7 December 1944, the Canadian troops moved into the building, which had sleeping quarters equipped for 60 soldiers. That’s when sergeant George Eardley went into action.In an act of apparent suicide, Eardley stood up. Firing his sten gun and throwing grenades, he succeeded in disabling German machine gun posts three times without any cover. Four of his comrades were injured. His actions earned him the Victoria Cross.The highest awardThe Victoria Cross is Britain’s highest bravery award. It was initiated by Queen Victoria in 1856 and was awarded only 61 times to the British Army during the Second World War, mostly posthumously. Ten were awarded for action in the Netherlands, one of which was Eardley’s battle in North Brabant. However, the medal is not awarded instantly as all superior authorities – right up to the British monarch – have to give their approval.On 2 January 1945 his wife received a telegram informing her that her husband had received the highest military award. Eardley arrived back a few days later and was reunited with his family. He was received like a hero. There were parties in which even film stars appeared. A month later he was handed the Victoria Cross by King George VI, who confided in him that he was happy to be able, finally, to award this medal to a living soldierPost-traumatic stress syndrome?Then something seemed to happen to Eardley’s mind. He started fantasising. He claimed to have captured the highest German military officer on Walcheren, General Daser, which was clearly not true. He also wore the so-called Italy Star although he never served in Italy. His biggest claim was that he had taken General Rommel, the famous Desert Fox, prisoner in Libya but that he had escaped! And all of this without setting foot in Africa.He left the army in 1950. Within a few months he separated from his wife and alienated himself from his three children. He remarried, left Congleton and took a job with Rolls Royce. In a road accident in 1964 his second wife was killed and part of his left leg had to be amputated. When his sons visited him in hospital he told them, ‘It’s fine that you came, but you can leave me alone now.’ Five months later Eardley married for the third time and in the summer of 1991 me moved back to Congleton without telling his children. He died a few months later.A lonely farewellOn 11 September 1991 George Eardley’s children received a telephone call from their aunt. ‘Have you read the death notices in the newspaper?’ The children hadn’t. ‘Your father has died.’ They hadn’t spoken to him for more than 20 years.The church was almost empty for his funeral, a stark contrast to the tumultuous reception in his home town in 1944. Many people in the town could not forget how he had abandoned his family. Two of the sons had in turn forgiven their father. After his death they committed themselves to his remembrance and in 2004 a life-size bronze statue of Eardley was unveiled in Congleton.This story was part of Brabant Remembers, a campaign for 75 years of Freedom in the province of North Brabant.

Ook draagt hij de zogenaamde Italy Star, hoewel hij nooit in Italië heeft gediend. Het sterkste verhaal dat hij opdist, is dat hij generaal Rommel, de beroemde Woestijnvos, in Libië gevangen had genomen, maar dat deze wist te ontsnappen! En dat terwijl hij nooit in Afrika is geweest.In 1950 verlaat hij het leger. Binnen enkele maanden scheidt hij van zijn vrouw en begint de vervreemding van zijn drie kinderen. Hij hertrouwt, verlaat Congleton en krijgt een baan bij Rolls Royce. Bij een verkeersongeluk in 1964 komt zijn tweede vrouw om het leven en moet er een deel van zijn linkerbeen worden afgezet. Als zijn zoons hem opzoeken in het ziekenhuis zegt hij, ‘Fijn dat jullie zijn geweest, maar laat me nu maar weer met rust.’ Na vijf maanden trouwt Eardley voor de derde keer. Hans went to secondary school at the Canisiuscollege and played at Union, a local field hockey club. He got his grammar school diploma just before the war and started studying at the Roman Catholic Handelshoogeschool, now known as Tilburg University.When war broke out, Hans and his fellow students were given a declaration of loyalty to sign. The declaration, which had been in force since the beginning of 1943, presented every student with a difficult choice. Those who signed had to refrain from any action against the German Reich. Those who do not sign were no longer allowed to attend lectures. Hans had a month to think about it, but he didn’t need it; he refused to sign the declaration. And he knew the consequences, so he went into hiding in the immediate vicinity of Uden, the region he knew so well. He just managed to complete his first year of study successfully from his hiding place.On patrolOperation Market Garden started in the autumn of 1944, and on 19 September Uden was liberated. Hans Schoon could leave the hiding place where he had spent a year of his life. When he heard that the Allies would be reaching Nijmegen the next day, he got really excited. He rushed to his friend Bob Tiemstra. “Bob, I lived there! We have to do something, man. Just help, join in! Will you go with me?” Together they signed up for the American 82nd Airborne Division. With their knowledge of the region and their best English they showed the Allies the way. As guides and interpreters, but without any fighting experience, they joined patrols to the most dangerous places.&nbsp;After Operation Market Garden was terminated on 26 September, Hans and Bob remained active, and 6 October was no different. On that day, the friends took part in a patrol in Elst. Suddenly gunfire sounded from the side. Then a hard bang. After that there were only flames. Their car was on fire. Bob managed to get out of the wreckage and was immediately captured by the Germans. Hans didn’t stand a chance. He perished in the flames. FoundShortly thereafter Hans’ parents were told that their son was missing. That’s all the Americans could say. Hans’ father started looking for his son’s grave. Unfortunately this search was in vain. Father Schoon placed a death announcement in&nbsp;De Gelderlander&nbsp;newspaper: ‘We have obtained certainty that our eldest son and brother Hans Schoon died in the Betuwe on 6 October 1944 for the liberation of his homeland, at the age of 22.’The name of Hans Schoon is mentioned on the Canisiuscollege war memorial and on the monument for fallen students at Tilburg University. But also on the Honorary List of the Fallen 1940-1945 and the memorial stone at Union, his hockey club in Nijmegen. After the war, his friend Bob Tiemstra helped establish the Liberation Museum in Groesbeek. Op zijn onderduikadres slaagt hij er nog net in zijn eerste studiejaar met succes af te ronden .Op patrouilleIn het najaar van 1944 komt Operatie Market Garden op gang. Op 19 september wordt Uden bevrijd. Na een jaar kan Hans Schoon dus zijn schuilplaats verlaten. Als hij hoort dat de geallieerden de volgende dag al Nijmegen bereiken, houdt hij het niet meer. Hij haast zich naar zijn vriend Bob Tiemstra. ‘Bob, ik heb daar gewoond! We moeten wat doen, man. Gewoon helpen, meedoen! Ga je mee?’ Samen melden ze zich aan bij de Amerikaanse 82eluchtlandingsdivisie. Met hun kennis van de streek en in hun beste Engels wijzen zij de geallieerden overal de weg. Als gids en als tolk, maar zonder enige gevechtservaring, gaan zij mee op patrouille naar de gevaarlijkste plekken.Ook nadat Operatie Market Garden op 26 september is beëindigd, blijven Hans en Bob actief. Zoals op 6 oktober. De vrienden nemen dan deel aan een patrouille in Elst. Plots klinkt er geweervuur van opzij. Dan een harde knal. Daarna zijn er nog alleen maar vlammen. Hun auto staat in lichterlaaie. Bob weet uit het wrak te komen en wordt direct door de Duitsers krijgsgevangen gemaakt. Hans heeft geen schijn van kans. Hij verbrandt in de auto. GevondenKort daarop horen de ouders van Hans dat hun zoon vermist is. Meer weten de Amerikanen niet. De vader van Hans begint zijn zoektocht naar het graf van zijn zoon. Helaas is deze zoektocht tevergeefs. Vader Schoon plaatst een overlijdensbericht in De Gelderlander: ‘Wij verkregen zekerheid dat onze oudste zoon en broer Hans Schoon op 6 oktober 1944 in de Betuwe sneuvelde voor de bevrijding van zijn vaderland, in de leeftijd van 22 jaar.’De naam van Hans Schoon staat vermeld op het oorlogsmonument van het Canisiuscollege en op het monument voor de gevallen studenten van Tilburg University. Maar ook op de Erelijst van Gevallenen 1940-1945 en de gedenksteen van de Nijmeegse hockeyclub Union. Zijn vriend Bob Tiemstra zette zich na de oorlog in voor de oprichting van het Bevrijdingsmuseum in Groesbeek. Mariet, haar zus Jo, broer Kees en zusje Sjaantje gaan hem, samen met nog twee andere kinderen, roepen voor het middageten. Ze mogen over de landingsbanen terug – nu is Janus van 21 er immers bij. Mariet en Jo treuzelen, samen met hun vriendinnetje. Wie weet heeft een van de Amerikaanse militairen wel chocola over… Het mag niet, want Janus loopt al door, maar ze doen het toch: ze lopen richting de vliegtuigen.Groen jasjeDan hoort Mariet een knal. Ze kijkt op en ziet een wolk. Ze rent erheen. Er is iets ontploft, de kinderen die er net nog liepen, staan niet meer overeind. ‘Nog steeds zie ik mijn zusje liggen. In een groen jasje met een wit streepje erdoor.’ In paniek loopt Mariet weg. Op de hoek van het veld blijft ze staan, in tranen, met haar zus en vriendinnetje. De pastoor uit Sint Oedenrode neemt de drie meisjes mee terug naar de boerderij waar ze verblijven.Drie dagen lang zoeken vader en moeder Van Kronenburg naar hun kinderen. Kees van dertien is door de kracht van de ontploffing op slag gedood. Hem vinden ze terug in het klooster van Sint Oedenrode. De zesjarige Sjaantje is moeilijker te vinden. Zij blijkt, zwaargewond, van noodhospitaal naar ziekenhuis te zijn gebracht, maar ze overleeft haar verwondingen niet. Uiteindelijk vinden vader en moeder haar in Zeelst. Ze nemen haar lichaam, gewikkeld in een deken, mee haar huis. De kinderen worden begraven in Sint Oedenrode, in kleine kisten van gliderhout. Wat er precies ontploft is, is onduidelijk. Ook Janus is overleden en kan het niet naver­tellen. Eén jongen, Ties van elf, overleeft de klap. Hij omschrijft het projectiel als een klein, blinkend doosje. Berta Roefs and her family lived in the Helena Hoeve, a farmhouse right in the middle of the landing area. On 17 September Berta and her mother fled into the air raid shelter. They could hear the planes and anti-aircraft fire from their hiding place and they could see the coloured parachutes.After many anxious moments in the shelter they found three wounded soldiers in the barn. “We didn’t really understand what was going on but from one moment to the next the war was all around us”.The Americans quickly set up an improvised field hospital at the farmhouse. Berta and her family decided to help them in any way they could. Wounded soldiers were received and dispatched. More than 65 years later Berta commented: “It was unbelievable to us how they all remained calm and were so friendly, but it was a pity that we couldn’t talk to them.”&nbsp; After all, they couldn’t speak English. “We still regret that we didn’t write down any names of the ones who stayed with us for longer or shorter periods. I hope the men who survived the war had a good life!”In 2011 Battle detective Tom from Eindhoven, specialised in Operation Market Garden, received a letter from the veteran John Nasea Jr., then aged 89. He was seriously injured when he landed in Best in 1944 and after a hellish ride was taken to a field hospital at a Brabant farmhouse. He kept falling in and out of consciousness. After staying in various allied hospitals he finally made it safely back to the United States. John Nasea has spent his entire life wondering where it was that his life was saved. It was his wish to celebrate his 90th birthday in that very place.Battle detective Tom got down to work and quickly came to the conclusion that John was almost certainly treated in the Helena Hoeve farmhouse. In 2012 and accompanied by his daughter, John Nasea Jr. travelled from America to the Netherlands. On 13 June, his 90th birthday, he visited various remembrance locations of Operation Market Garden. At 4 o’clock in the afternoon he arrived at Helena Hoeve. He was welcomed there by Berta Roefs, then 98 years old. On his birthday John gave her an orange handkerchief on which was written: September 19th 1944 June 13th 2012.So after almost 68 years the paths in the lives of John and Berta crossed once again. After many years Berta received an explanation as to what happened to the wounded soldier and John finally could picture where he had been rescued, and by whom.John was never decorated for his contribution to Operation Market garden. In October 2012 Battle detective Tom travelled to America to pin the Oranje Erekoord (Orange Lanyard) on John Nasea Jr. in commemoration of his contribution to the liberation of the Netherlands.

Om 4 uur ’s middags komt hij aan bij de Helena Hoeve. Daar wordt hij begroet door Berta Roefs, dan 98 jaar oud. Op zijn verjaardag doet John haar een oranje zakdoek cadeau waarop staat: September 19th 1944 June 13th 2012.Zo kruisen, na bijna 68 jaar, de levenspaden van John en Berta elkaar opnieuw. Na jaren krijgt Berta duidelijkheid over hoe het een van de gewonde soldaten vergaan is en heeft John eindelijk een beeld van waar hij gered moet zijn, en door wie.John was nooit gedecoreerd voor zijn bijdrage aan Operatie Market Garden. On Sunday 17 September 1944 many inhabitants of Hoeven set off to church, as they did every week, not knowing what awaited them that day. At around one o’clock in the afternoon the airspace filled up with an endless stream of planes. They were there for operation Market Garden. In the Dakota C-47 Stoy Hora pilots Krebs and Cannon were reliving D-day; once again they dropped paratroopers, this time from the 82nd Airborne Division and near the town of Nijmegen. But instead of returning safely to their home base in Nottingham, they were shot at near Breda. A failed flight for the two pilots and their four-man crew.&nbsp;Eyewitnesses Piet Reijnders, Fientje Snepvangers and Marcel Pieterse saw the Dakota make an emergency landing near Hoeven. The crashed Dakota was still almost completely intact. There were no weapons in the plane, but to the surprise of the increasingly large crowd of curious onlookers it turned out to be filled with delicacies. Delicacies which quickly disappeared into pockets and stomachs. When the German patrols later found the Dakota, the aircraft had been long empty.Meanwhile, the crew managed to get to safety in time by jumping out of the plane with parachutes. “While we were gliding in the wind, German patrols started shooting at us from the ground. It was not very pleasant, to put it mildly,” Howard Cannon said afterwards. The crew of the Dakota was taken in and hidden by Dutch resistance fighters. On 21 September, dressed in Dutch military police uniforms, they were put in a motorcycle sidecar and driven through busy enemy traffic to the V &amp; D department store in Breda. On 24 September Howard Cannon wrote a letter to his parents: “The people here are so friendly, we will never be able to repay them.” Meanwhile the Dakota crew was waiting in the department store attic for a chance to escape from occupied territory. When it became too dangerous at V &amp; D, the pilots were housed with various town residents by the Breda resistance. Weeks later, the pilots were taken to a hiding address in Wernhout by brothers Charles and Frans Marijnissen. Soon after their arrival Wernhout was liberated; after 42 days in hiding the pilots were reunited with the Allied troops. In December 1944 Krebs and Cannon visited the Dakota near Hoeven, North Brabant had already been largely liberated by then.“When I left the Netherlands, I sensed I had accomplished far more than our original mission. I had learned from the ‘defeated’ the true meaning of freedom and how we must never give up fighting for it,” Howard Cannon said in an interview with newspaper De Telegraaf on 27 May 1961. By then Cannon was a Democrat senator in Nevada. He had received many military awards during his military career between 1941 and 1946. Cannon died in 2002 at the age of 90 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honours.The stories of the pilots Howard Cannon and Frank Krebs and the Dakota C-47 Stoy Hora are part of the ‘D-Day Experience’ wing of the D-Day Paratroopers historical centre at Saint-Come-du-Mont in Normandy, which was opened in 2015. The exhibit also includes a fully restored replica of the Stoy Hora which has been converted into a flight simulator. One of Howard Cannon’s daughters donated a photo album that her father and the other crew members made during the liberation of Europe. De neergestorte Dakota is bijna nog geheel intact. In het toestel worden geen wapens gevonden, maar blijkt tot verrassing van de snel toegestroomde bevolking gevuld met lekkernijen. Lekkernijen die ze snel soldaat maken. Als de Duitse patrouilles de Dakota vinden, is het toestel al lang leeg.Ondertussen weet de bemanning zich tijdig in veiligheid te brengen door met parachutes uit het toestel te springen. “Terwijl we met de wind meedreven, begonnen vanaf de grond Duitse patrouilles op ons te schieten. Het is zacht uitgedrukt, als ik zeg dat het niet prettig was”, vertelt Howard Cannon. De bemanning van de Dakota wordt door Nederlandse verzetsstrijders opgevangen en verborgen gehouden. Gekleed in marechaussee uniform worden ze 21 september per motor met zijspan tussen het drukke vijandelijke verkeer door naar het V &amp; D warenhuis in Breda gebracht. Op 24 september schrijft Howard Cannon een brief naar zijn ouders. “De mensen zijn hier zo vriendelijk, we kunnen ze nooit terugbetalen”. Intussen wacht de Dakota bemanning op de zolderverdieping op een kans om bezet gebied te ontvluchten. Als het te gevaarlijk wordt bij V &amp; D worden de piloten door het Bredase verzet ondergebracht bij particulieren in Breda. Weken later worden de piloten door de broers Charles en Frans Marijnissen naar een onderduikadres in Wernhout gebracht. Al snel na hun aankomst wordt Wernhout bevrijd en worden de piloten na 42 dagen herenigd met de geallieerde troepen. In december 1944 bezoeken Krebs en Cannon de neergestorte Dakota nabij Hoeven, Noord-Brabant is dan al grotendeels bevrijd.“Toen ik Nederland verliet, begreep ik dat ik meer tot stand had gebracht, dan slechts het uitvoeren van mijn orders – ik had geleerd van de mensen die onderworpen waren wat de ware betekenis van vrijheid is en dat we nooit mogen opgeven daarvoor te vechten”, vertelde Howard Cannon in een interview op 27 mei 1961 met De Telegraaf. Cannon was toen senator voor de Democraten in Nevada. Tijdens zijn militaire loopbaan tussen 1941 en 1946 kreeg hij vele militaire onderscheidingen. Cannon stierf in 2002 op 90 jarige leeftijd en werd begraven op Arlington National Cemetery met volledige militaire eer.De verhalen van de piloten Howard Cannon en Frank Krebs en de Dakota C-47 Stoy Hora zijn onderdeel van de ‘D-Day Experience’ in het historische centrum D-Day Paratroopers in Saint-Come-du-Mont in Normandië, dat werd geopend in 2015. Daar is een volledig gerestaureerde replica van de Stoy Hora omgezet in een vluchtsimulator. There was a big pile of sand against the outer door to keep out shrapnel and bullets. Close by was Piet Peeters’ farmhouse. German soldiers had set up a combat post there. The consequences soon became apparent.The patrolAt ten in the morning of Friday 13 October 1944, Neel’s father saw soldiers approaching. He could see from their uniform that they were not Germans. He urged his family to take immediate shelter. A patrol from the 1st/4th battalion of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Regiment approached the farmhouse with caution. The Germans opened fire. The civilians in the farmhouse heard the crack of gunfire but also screaming and shouting. The British soldiers were taken completely by surprise; three managed to escape but two were captured and three were killed. As often happened, the three were buried provisionally, or at least placed in shallow pits. The same afternoon, British Typhoon fighter bombers attacked the German military combat post. Peeters’ farmhouse was completely destroyed. It’s a wonder that there were no casualties.Good bootsPeace returned the following day. Neel decided to investigate. He saw the first dead man in a ditch next to the farmhouse. From the identity tag he could read that the man’s name was Hunter. He still had a hand grenade with him and a magazine from a Bren gun. He had been hit in the eye. Hunter’s boots were damaged but footwear was scarce, so Neel took them. He would wear them for a long time, even though they were a bit too big. There were foxholes next to the sandy track and a body was sticking out of one of them. It was black from the dust. It looked as though the Germans wanted to get the dead in the ground as quickly as possible. Corporal Ford, as the soldier was called, had bullet wounds all over his body. He was wearing gloves with long sleeves, just like a motorbike rider’s. Then Neel saw the third victim, a soldier called Kirk. He had a cut in his neck. A bit earlier Neels had seen a German soldier near Kirk, he suspected that the British soldier had still been alive and that the German had killed him with a knife. Neel was there a few days later when two civilians gave the dead liberators a temporary grave.AftermathUlicoten&nbsp; was liberated two weeks later, on Friday 28 October. Not long afterwards the three British soldiers were exhumed. It was reported that Neels was present again. He remembered the terrible stench and the bizarre details until late into his life. Dan openen de Duitsers het vuur. De burgers in de boerderij horen het geknetter van de wapens, maar ook gebrul en gegil. De Britse soldaten zijn volledig verrast. Drie kunnen er ontkomen, maar twee worden gevangen genomen en drie sneuvelen. Zoals niet ongebruikelijk worden de doden provisorisch begraven, oftewel in ondiepe kuilen gegooid. Diezelfde middag vallen Britse jachtbommenwerpers, Typhoons, het Duitse steunpunt aan. De boerderij van Peeters wordt volledig verwoest. Als door een wonder vallen hierbij geen slachtoffers.Goede schoenenDe volgende dag is de rust weergekeerd. Neel besluit op onderzoek uit te gaan. In de sloot naast het ouderlijk huis ziet hij de eerste gesneuvelde liggen. Op het identiteitsplaatje leest hij dat de man Hunter heet. Hij heeft nog een hand­granaat bij zich en magazijnen voor een zogenaamde Brengun. Hij is getroffen in een oog. De schoenen van Hunter zijn beschadigd, maar goed schoeisel is schaars en Neel neemt ze mee. Hij zal ze nog lang dragen, ook al zijn ze iets te groot. Naast de zandweg zijn schuttersputjes. Uit een daarvan steekt een opgevouwen lichaam. Het is zwart van het stof. Het lijkt alsof de Duitsers de dode snel in de grond wilden hebben. Korporaal Ford, zo heet de militair, heeft schot­wonden over zijn hele lijf. Hij draagt handschoenen met lange kappen, zoals een motorrijder. Dan ziet Neel het derde slacht­offer, soldaat Kirk. Die heeft een snijwond in zijn hals. Even daarvoor nog heeft Neel een Duitser gezien bij Kirk. Hij vermoedt dat de Brit nog leefde en dat de Duitser hem met een mes heeft gedood. Een paar dagen later is Neel er ook bij als twee burgers de gesneuvelde bevrijders een tijdelijk graf geven.NasleepTwee weken later, op vrijdag 28 oktober werd Ulicoten be­vrijd. Niet lang daarna werden de drie Britten opgegraven. Neel was daar naar verluidt opnieuw bij. Tot op hoge leeftijd herinnerde hij zich ook de afschuwelijke stank en een bizar detail. Farm lifeJust before the liberation of Etten-Leur, Toon Graumans was busy working the land. Luckily, Toon managed to keep his horses and worked the land for a new harvest. Trains full of provisions slowly passed by just a few hundred metres away. Toon worked hard and kept his head down. The sooner it was all over, the better. Suddenly the horses stood still and looked up. Toon pushed them forward, they didn’t have time to stand still. But when Toon looked up, too, he suddenly saw a man standing on his land. The man was wearing old, worn-out clothes full of holes. It seemed like he hadn’t washed or shaved in years. He waved, but Toon continued his work unperturbed.Toon made the next round with his horses across the field. When he returned to where he had just seen the man, he saw that five other men had joined him. They looked like tramps, too, all wearing handcuffs. It looked like the men must have been prisoners of war who escaped from the slow-moving goods train.A matter of life or deathIt made Toon a little nervous having six escaped prisoners of war on his land. If someone saw and betrayed the farmer, he certainly wouldn’t make it out alive. Still, Toon decided to help the men. He collected bread and milk for the prisoners. They needed to be strengthened up before they could continue their long journey home. The men were enjoying the delicious food, when suddenly the neighbour came walking by. Toon tensed up, but he told him what happened on his land in the last hour. To Toon’s great relief, the neighbour decided to help him. The escaped prisoners of war were later picked up by resistance fighters. Afterwards, Toon never heard anything from the men again.In October 1944, Etten-Leur was liberated and slowly returned to the countryside it had once been. And so did Toon, who continued his life as a farmer, along with his horses. He always wondered what happened to the six escaped prisoners of war who suddenly appeared on his land that day.Historical context: Some civilians who were not proactively engaged in resistance activities, were unintentionally faced with a choice during the war: to help resist or to comply with the interests of the occupying forces. Both choices came with their own set of consequences. Resisting meant endangering your own life by helping others and opposing the interests of the occupier. But complying with those interests could be seen by the Dutch people as a betrayal of their homeland, and that wasn’t simply accepted by everyone, either. That meant it wasn’t always easy to make the ‘right’ choice.&nbsp;This story was part of Brabant Remembers, a campaign for 75 years of Freedom in the province of North Brabant.

Het boerenlevenVlak voor de bevrijding van Etten-Leur is Toon Graumans druk bezig op het land. Gelukkig heeft Toon zijn paarden weten te behouden en bewerkt hij samen met zijn paarden de grond voor een nieuwe oogst. Op een paar honderd meter afstand rijden goederentreinen langzaam voorbij. Maar wanneer ook Toon opkijkt, ziet hij plots een man op zijn land staan. De man draagt oude versleten kleren vol gaten. Het lijkt alsof hij zich al in geen jaren heeft gewassen of geschoren. Hij zwaait, maar Toon gaat onverstoorbaar door met zijn werk.Toon maakt met zijn paarden de volgende ronde over het land. Bij terugkomst op de plek waar hij zojuist de man aantrof, ziet hij dat er zich een vijftal mannen bij de man hebben gevoegd. Ook zij lijken wel landlopers, allen dragen handboeien. Toon beseft dat de mannen krijgsgevangenen moeten zijn geweest die uit de langzaam rijdende goederentreinen zijn ontsnapt.Een kwestie van leven of doodHet maakt Toon wat nerveus. Zes ontsnapte krijgsgevangenen op zijn land. Wat als iemand ze ziet en de boer verraadt,dan brengt hij het er zeker niet levend vanaf. Toch besluit Toon ze te helpen. Hij haalt brood en melk voor de krijgsgevangenen. Ze moeten aansterken voordat ze verder kunnen op hun lange tocht naar huis. De mannen genieten van het heerlijke voedsel, als plotseling de buurman aan komt lopen. Toon is gespannen. Maar hij vertelt hem toch wat zich het afgelopen uur op zijn land heeft afgespeeld. Tot grote opluchting van Toon besluit de buurman hem een handje te helpen. De ontsnapte krijgsgevangenen worden later op­gehaald door verzetsstrijders. Nadien heeft Toon nooit meer iets van de mannen vernomen.In oktober 1944 werd Etten-Leur bevrijd en keerde de rust langzaam terug op het platteland. Zo ook voor Toon die zijn leven als boer samen met zijn paarden voortzette. Hij bleef zich altijd afvragen hoe het zou zijn afgelopen met de zes ontsnapte krijgsgevangenen die toen plotseling op zijn land verschenen.Historisch kader: Sommige burgers, die zich niet proactief bezighielden met verzetsactiviteiten, kwamen tijdens de oorlog onbedoeld voor de keuze te staan: meehelpen aan het verzet of het naleven van de belangen van de bezetter. Beide kwamen niet zonder enige consequenties. Het verzet betekende je eigen leven in gevaar brengen door anderen te helpen en je afzetten tegen de belangen van de bezetter. Het naleven van deze belangen kon door het Nederlandse volk juist worden gezien als verraad tegenover het vaderland en ook dat werd niet zomaar door alle mensen geaccepteerd. Friday afternoon 22 September 1944. Marietje Kruijf (13) was sweeping up the broken glass in front of the house. The windows of the Kruijf farmhouse had been blown out in the fighting during the night while the English were constructing a Bailey bridge across the canal. Now the damage could be assessed. Father Albert and grandfather and grandmother were also in the yard. Then just over by the canal, the English were advancing towards Asten.Father suddenly called out: LIE DOWN!Marietje: “I knew at once that something was wrong. ‘Daddy, I’ve been hit’, I shouted. That’s where my story begins; on a day when events between Asten and Someren were as intense as in Normandy.Despite her serious injuries Marietje can still remember in detail what happened 75 years ago. She thanks her father for saving her life when he quickly went to get help. But also Father Vrijland, a priest who had been summoned and who jumped on his bike to find a doctor in Heeze. And the English ambulance crew who were stopped by the priest half way between Someren and Heeze and who, with Tonny Leenen as interpreter made their way to Slievenstraat 2. Also the English medic who bandaged up Marietje and gave her injections. And the army doctor who allowed Marietje and the wounded front-line soldier Corporal H. W. Price to go to the field hospital in Geldrop. To Cor Oosteweeghel who happened to be passing through Geldrop and donated blood for her. To the surgeon Buckley Hamer who operated on her for an hour and a half. &nbsp;‘It will be a complete miracle if ‘Mary’ survives’, he told his anaesthetist.And the miracle happened! Corporal Price, aged 23, died two days later but Marietje stayed alive amongst the seriously wounded soldiers. She was the only civilian in the field hospital and was pampered there. “The soldiers even bought toys for me.”The field hospital was relocated on 7 October and Marieke had to move to the nearby St Anna Hospital. She cried and cried and the soldiers cried with her.In St Anna her crepe bandage was left on for too long and her knee did not heal properly. When she was finally discharged from hospital at the end of June 1945, she was still unable to walk. In January 1946 she was measured up for orthopaedic footwear. Only then could she pick up her life again.Marietje became a secretary, married Henk Kooistra in 1960 and gave birth to healthy twins in 1965. Another miracle as it was assumed her war injuries would make that impossible.In 1984 Marietje worked as a secretary for the publication of the wartime book Geschiedenis van Someren in de Tweede Wereldoorlog(History of Someren in the Second World War). The war then boomeranged back into her life.Marietje and Henk became involved in Remembrance Day, liberation festivals and reunions of veterans, both in the Netherlands and in England. She became a member of the Royal British Legion and did everything in her power to make the British liberators achieve their ‘Liberation Route’. She provided hospitality, arranged host families, transport and guidance, everything. Just as the soldiers had pampered young Marietje, now Marietje could pamper the veterans. Another miracle as it was assumed her war injuries would make that impossible.In 1984 Marietje worked as a secretary for the publication of the wartime book Geschiedenis van Someren in de Tweede Wereldoorlog(History of Someren in the Second World War). The war then boomeranged back into her life.Marietje and Henk became involved in Remembrance Day, liberation festivals and reunions of veterans, both in the Netherlands and in England. She became a member of the Royal British Legion and did everything in her power to make the British liberators achieve their ‘Liberation Route’. She provided hospitality, arranged host families, transport and guidance, everything. Just as the soldiers had pampered young Marietje, now Marietje could pamper the veterans. Marietje Kruijf (13) veegt voor ’t huis het kapotte glas bijeen. Tijdens de nachtelijke gevechten, toen de Engelsen een Baileybrug sloegen over het kanaal, zijn in boerderij Kruijf de ruiten gesprongen. Nu kan de schade worden opgenomen. Vader Albert en opa en opoe zijn ook op ’t erf. En ginds, bij het kanaal, rukken de Engelsen op naar Asten.Plotseling roept vader: LIGGEN!Marietje: ”Ik wist meteen dat ’t mis was. ’Papa, ik ben ge­raakt’, riep ik. Daar begint mijn verhaal. Op de dag dat het er tussen Asten en Someren even fel aan toeging als in Normandië.“Marietje blijft ondanks zware verwondingen bij kennis en 75 jaar later herinnert zij zich de gebeurtenissen van toen nog in detail. Zij dankt haar leven aan vader Albert, die als een haas hulp gaat halen. Maar ook aan de gealarmeerde dominee Vrijland, die meteen op zijn fiets springt om in Heeze een dokter te zoeken. Aan het Engelse ambulancepersoneel dat halverwege Someren en Heeze voor de dominee stopt en zich door tolk Tonny Leenen naar de Slievenstraat 2 laat loodsen. Aan de Engelse hospik die Marietjes eerste noodverband legt en haar bevend injecties geeft. Aan de leger­arts van wie Marietje samen met de zwaargewonde front­soldaat korporaal H. W. Price naar het veldhospitaal in Geldrop mag. Aan Cor Oosteweeghel, een toevallige passant in Geldrop, die voor haar bloed afstaat. Aan chirurg Buckley Hamer die haar anderhalf uur lang opereert. ”Het is een ’complete miracle’ als ‚Mary‘ overleeft”, zegt hij tegen zijn anesthesist.En dat mirakel gebeurt! Korporaal Price, 23 jaar, overlijdt twee dagen later, maar Marietje blijft tussen de zwaar­gewonde frontsoldaten in leven. Ze is de enige burger in het veldhospitaal en wordt daar vertroeteld: ”De soldaten kochten zelfs speelgoed voor me.”Op 7 oktober wordt het veldhospitaal verplaatst en moet Marietje naar het nabije Sint-Annaziekenhuis. Zij huilt alles bij elkaar en de soldaten huilen met haar mee.In het Sint-Anna blijft haar rekverband te lang zitten en vergroeit haar knie. Als ze eind juni 1945 eindelijk uit het ziekenhuis wordt ontslagen, kan ze nog niet lopen. In januari 1946 krijgt ze orthopedisch schoeisel aangemeten. Pas dan kan ze haar leven weer oppikken.Marietje wordt secretaresse, trouwt in 1960 met Henk Kooistra en bevalt in 1965 van een gezonde tweeling. They were just a few hundred metres from the border when they encountered a British reconnaissance unit. Together they smoked cigarettes, and orange ribbons were handed out. The priest took photographs including one of a tank, two soldiers and some of the villagers, including Jan.After bidding farewell to the soldiers, some of the villagers headed back to the village, but some, including Jan Maas, were eager to see more British soldiers, so they happily marched on. Without warning, a group of Germans jumped out from the trees in an ambush. The villagers scattered in every direction but four were caught, including Jan Maas. They were searched and made to stand up against a wall at a farm. ‘British propagandists!’ There was the sound of a pistol clicking before one of the Germans yelled, ‘Oh, let them go home. You’re all free!’.EscapeThe men were stunned and ran off towards their bicycles. ‘Wow,’ said Jan Maas, ‘that was a close call.’ It was at that point that the shots rang out, four in total. One man was shot in the abdomen and across three of his fingers. The second was hit in the head and fell to the ground, dead. The third was shot through his hat, but remained unscathed, and while he was dodging the bullets, saw the fourth man being shot in the head. The fourth man was Jan Maas, who was killed instantly.It took a week for his wife and children to learn of his demise. There was no doubt about his death — one of the survivors had removed his wedding ring and his wallet from his jacket pocket. The priest returned the items to his widow. On the same day, 19 September, Jan Maas was taken to the cemetery on the back of an open truck, draped in the flag of the Red Cross.Two days earlier, 17 September 1944, Valkenswaard and Borkel en Schaft were liberated by the British following heavy bombardment in the Bergeijk forests and surrounding villages. Like Jan Maas, many others died towards the end of the war on account of carelessness, accidents or sheer cruelty on the part of the Germans and their accomplices. Op een daarvan een pantserwagen, twee soldaten en enkele dorpelingen, onder wie Jan.Na het afscheid keert een aantal mannen terug naar huis. De anderen willen méér Engelsen zien. Zo ook Jan Maas. Ze trappen vrolijk verder. Plots springen uit de bosjes enkele Duitsers. De Borkelnaren rennen alle kanten uit. Vier worden er gepakt, onder wie Jan Maas. De Duitsers fouilleren hen en zetten hen bij een boerderij tegen de muur. ‘Englische Propagandisten!’ Een pistool klikt. Maar dan zegt een van de Duitsers: ‘Ach was, lass sie nach Hause gehen. Sie sind frei!’Op een lopenDe mannen zijn verbijsterd. Maar ze zetten het op een lopen naar hun fietsen. ‘Tjee,’ zegt Jan Maas. ‘Daar komen we nog goed weg.’ Precies op dat moment klinken er schoten. Vier in totaal. Eén man wordt in de buik geraakt en dwars door drie vingers. De tweede wordt in zijn hoofd geraakt en valt dood neer. De derde wordt door zijn hoed geschoten, maar blijft ongedeerd. Terwijl hij wegduikt, ziet hij hoe ook de vierde man in het hoofd wordt geraakt. Het is Jan Maas. Hij is op slag dood.Pas na een week vernemen zijn vrouw en kinderen dat Jan dood is. Dat hij het is, is zeker, want een van de overlevenden heeft de trouwring van zijn vinger gehaald en de portefeuille uit zijn jas. De pastoor brengt alles naar de weduwe. Diezelfde dag, op 19 september, wordt Jan Maas op een open vrachtwagen, bedekt met Rode Kruisvlag, naar het kerkhof gebracht.Twee dagen eerder, op 17 september 1944, waren Valkenswaard en Borkel &amp; Schaft door de Engelsen bevrijd. Dat gebeurde na hevige bombardementen op de Bergeijkse bossen en de omliggende dorpen. Net als Jan Maas kwamen ook op andere plaatsen aan het eind van de oorlog veel mensen om door onvoorzichtigheid, ongelukken of pure wreedheid van de Duitsers en hun handlangers. Turbulent daysOne week after D-Day David Silvertop crossed the English Channel. The 32 year old British commanding officer of the 3rd battalion of the Royal Tank Regiment already had plenty of experience in mainland Europe by playing a key role in the liberation of Antwerp. He then received the order to relieve the British troops in the Netherlands after the failed airborne landing offensive Operation Market Garden had been abandoned.On Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September the British patrols reached Sint Anthonis. The residents of this country village thought they had been liberated, but that hope was short-lived: by Monday morning the village was dominated by German military. That happened a lot in those turbulent days. Groups of soldiers from both sides marched from one place to another, meeting each other but sometimes missing each other, and sometimes they were billeted close to each other without any of them knowing.On that Monday, 25 September, Silvertop’s 3e battalion of the Royal Tank Regiment arrived in Sint Anthonis. The Germans quickly made themselves scarce. Silvertop and his men decided to wait for reinforcements from the British 159th brigade. Just outside the village reconnaissance troops from this main unit discovered five German tanks coming from Gemert. Shots were fired in both directions after which the five tanks tried to retreat.Wrong place, wrong timeThree of the armoured vehicles drove at full speed towards Sint Anthonis followed by the British. The village centre was full of the English so there was no option other than to speed through the streets while shooting and trying to escape.Precisely at that moment David Silvertop was standing at a crossroads in the village. There was a top level consultation: Brigadier General Harvey had summoned Major Thompson and battalion commanders Orr and Silvertop to discuss strategy. Why they came together at this unprotected place &nbsp;remains a mystery. The situation was tense and there was sporadic shooting. The three German tanks only noticed the soldiers at the last moment. The one at the back drove into the Breestraat, rammed a house and came to a standstill.One of the Sint Anthonis residents saw how the four men were leaning over their maps. ‘Suddenly I heard shooting and saw the German tank come out of the Lepelstraat. A German soldier wearing a green camouflage jacket shot with his machine gun like a madman from the tank. Harvey escaped with a few scratches, Thompson received a bullet in his lung but survived, Orr was severely wounded and died later that day in hospital – he was able to say that it had been a stupid idea to discuss this in the middle of a crossroads. Silvertop was also hit and was killed on the spot. A classic example of wrong place, wrong time.A bit further on the British captured the two remaining German armoured vehicles. What had happened made the allies in Sint Anthonis nervous. When a short time later a number of British tanks entered the village, they were almost shot at by their own units.EpilogueTwo German prisoners of war were instructed to dig a grave for officer Silvertop at the graveyard next to the church on the Brink. The British posthumously promoted him to Colonel. The street in which he died was named after him. Even buiten het dorp stuiten verkenningstroepen van deze hoofdmacht, die vanaf Gemert komen, op een vijftal Duitse pantserwagens. Over en weer wordt geschoten, waarna de vijf voertuigen proberen weg te komen.Wrong place, wrong timeAchtervolgd door de Britten rijden drie van de wagens op volle snelheid richting Sint Anthonis. De dorpskern zit vol Engelsen, zodat er niets anders opzit dan de straten door te scheuren en al schietende een poging te ondernemen om te ontkomen.Juist op dat moment staat David Silvertop op een kruising in het dorp. Overleg op topniveau: brigade-generaal Harvey heeft zijn majoor Thompson en bataljonscommandanten Orr en Silvertop bijeen geroepen voor een strategische bespreking. Waarom ze juist op die onbeschutte plaats bijeen­komen, zal wel altijd een raadsel blijven. Het is onrustig. Her en der wordt geschoten. De drie voortjakkerende Duitse gevechtswagens merken de militairen daardoor pas op het laatste moment op. De achterste rijdt de Breestraat in, ramt een huis en komt tot stilstand.Een inwoner uit Sint Anthonis ziet hoe de vier mannen over stafkaarten gebogen staan. ‘Plotseling hoorde ik schieten en zag de Duitse pantserwagen vanuit de Lepelstraat komen. Een Duitse militair met groene camouflagejas schoot als een razende met een mitrailleur vanuit de gevechtswagen.’ Harvey komt er vanaf met wat schrammen, Thompson krijgt een kogel in een long maar overleeft, Orr wordt zwaar gewond afgevoerd en zal later die dag in een hospitaal sterven – hij weet nog uit te brengen dat het een dwaas idee was om daar midden op die kruising te overleggen. Silvertop is eveneens getroffen. Hij is op slag dood. Een klassiek voorbeeld van wrong place, wrong time.Iets verderop schakelen de Britten de twee resterende Duitse pantservoertuigen uit. Het gebeuren maakt de ge­allieerden in Sint Anthonis nerveus. Wanneer korte tijd later een aantal Britse tanks het dorp binnenrijdt, worden ze bijna door eigen eenheden onder vuur genomen.Twee Duitse krijgsgevangenen krijgen opgedragen een graf voor officier Silvertop te graven op de begraafplaats naast de kerk aan de Brink. Postuum benoemen de Britten hem tot kolonel. De straat waarin hij overleed, krijgt zijn naam. Karl-Heinz had wanted to become a forester, but he would not be granted such a peaceful life. Shortly after his High School (Gymnasium ) graduation in 1944 he was conscripted into the Wehrmacht Armed Forces. The war brought him to Brabant. As a gunner he formed part of the Fallschirmjäger Paratrooper Artillery. He was billeted with five others at the Kilsdonk family’s farm in Goirle. The family got on well with Karl-Heinz. He would warn them of visits by high-ranking German officers so the family could hide their radio and bicycles.LuckThe village reverberated on Friday 6 October 1944. The Allies and the Germans had gone into battle. Toos [5] and Jantje Kilsdonk [4] were playing near the well in the farmyard. A source of good luck? Karl-Heinz Rosch and his comrades ran out of the farmhouse on the way to their guns. They saw the children in the farmyard. Everyone ran on except the German boy from the pottery town. He picked up Toos and Jantje in his arms and ran to the cellar where he reunited the children with their mother. Soon afterwards Karl-Heinz ran back outside. But life and death sometimes go hand in hand: a mortar shell hit him and Karl-Heinz was fatally injured. He was just eighteen years and three days old. He was buried in a temporary grave in the farmyard. Shreds from his clothing would hang high in the branches of a tree for many years.Reburial took place in 1948. Rosch’s final resting place was in the German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn. But members of his family were not able to visit where he was killed and where he was laid to rest as they lived in East Germany. The good German - no fairy tale

Karl-Heinz had wanted to become a forester, but he would not be granted such a peaceful life. Shortly after his High School (Gymnasium ) graduation in 1944 he was conscripted into the Wehrmacht Armed Forces. The war brought him to Brabant. As a gunner he formed part of the Fallschirmjäger Paratrooper Artillery. He was billeted with five others at the Kilsdonk family’s farm in Goirle. The family got on well with Karl-Heinz. He would warn them of visits by high-ranking German officers so the family could hide their radio and bicycles.LuckThe village reverberated on Friday 6 October 1944. The Allies and the Germans had gone into battle. Toos [5] and Jantje Kilsdonk [4] were playing near the well in the farmyard. A source of good luck? Karl-Heinz Rosch and his comrades ran out of the farmhouse on the way to their guns. They saw the children in the farmyard. Everyone ran on except the German boy from the pottery town. He picked up Toos and Jantje in his arms and ran to the cellar where he reunited the children with their mother. Soon afterwards Karl-Heinz ran back outside. But life and death sometimes go hand in hand: a mortar shell hit him and Karl-Heinz was fatally injured. He was just eighteen years and three days old. He was buried in a temporary grave in the farmyard. Shreds from his clothing would hang high in the branches of a tree for many years.Reburial took place in 1948. Rosch’s final resting place was in the German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn. But members of his family were not able to visit where he was killed and where he was laid to rest as they lived in East Germany. Maar erf en sterf liggen vlakbij elkaar: een mortiergranaat slaat in. Karl-Heinz wordt dodelijk geraakt. Hij is achttien jaar en drie dagen oud. Op het erf krijgt hij een veldgraf. Nog jarenlang zullen flarden van zijn kleren hoog in de takken van een boom hangen.In 1948 vindt de herbegrafenis plaats. Rosch eindigt definitief op de Duitse militaire begraafplaats in Ysselsteyn. Toch kunnen zijn familieleden de sterfplek en rustplaats niet bezoeken. Zij wonen in Oost-Duitsland. Pas na de val van de Berlijnse muur kan de vader van Karl-Heinz de boerderij met eigen ogen zien. Maar de familie Kilsdonk zwijgt over de reddende daad van zijn zoon. Zij vreest knoestige reacties. Een mof is een mof, klinkt het in het dorp.Zwarte sneeuwLange tijd schaarden velen de uitdrukking ‘een goede Duitser’ in het rijtje van de zwarte sneeuw, vierkante cirkel en ongastvrije Brabander. Ook nadat de twee geredde kinderen hun verhaal in 2005 alsnog openbaar maakten en Karl-Heinz postuum dankten, bleef de kwestie discussie oproepen. Een oud-raadslid spande zich in om voor Rosch – “een held zonder glorie” – een beeld voor in het lokale heemkunde­museum te laten maken. Maar dat riep verzet op bij oud-gijzelaars, wier kameraden op een landgoed in Goirle waren geëxecuteerd.In 2008 was het standbeeld klaar. Maar een plek ontbrak. Voor een doorbraak zorgde Leo Vermeer uit Riel, een kern van de gemeente Goirle. Oktober 1944, näherten sich mehrere Panzer des kanadischen Panzerregiments Governor General Foot Guards von Süden her Moerstraten. Zwei Panzer blieben auf der Nordseite des Dorfes im schmierigen Schlamm stecken. Die deutschen Truppen setzten beide Panzer außer Gefecht und töteten vier Kanadier. Sie erhielten ein gemeinsames Feldgrab an der Ecke Luienhoekweg/Moerstraatsebaan, in der Nähe des Potersbos. Einige Tage später begruben die Kanadier an dieser Stelle fünf weitere Soldaten der Canadian Grenadier Guards und des Algonquin-Regiments. Sie waren im Kampf in und um Welberg gefallen. In a letter, written in German, Barker threatened to shoot the entire town to smithereens. That this would lead to heavy losses among the German occupiers and the population was obvious. According to Barker, Nass's position was hopeless. He issued an ultimatum: he had to surrender by Monday 6 November at 18:00.However, Nass was experienced and was not about to give in to the British forces' demand easily. He devised a strategy: he agreed to the departure of Willemstad's inhabitants, giving the British forces the allusion that he would fight for the town. While the British troops were busy taking in the civilians from Willemstad, Nass secretly ordered his troops to gather in the harbour. The next night, boats from the German navy picked up Nass and his men. When the British troops snuck into the fortress the next morning, after a massive artillery bombardment, it appeared that the bird had flown!

Volgens Barker was de positie van Nass hopeloos. Hij stelde een ultimatum: voor maandagavond 6 november 18.00 uur moest hij zich hebben overgegeven.Maar de ervaren Nass was niet van plan zo maar in te gaan op de Britse eis en bedacht een krijgslist. Hij stemde in met het vertrek van de inwoners van Willemstad en liet de Britten in de waan dat hij het gevecht om de stad aan zou gaan. Terwijl zijn tegenstander druk was met de opvang van de burgers uit Willemstad, gaf hij zijn troepen stiekem opdracht zich te verzamelen in de haven. Several pilots saw troop concentrations, an additional reason for heavy attacks.Dozens of bombs landed on the village, setting it on fire. As if that was not enough, the first fighter aircraft was followed by another group of Typhoon aircraft. These were feared by the German troops because they were equipped with rockets. The pilots fired rockets at the towers of three churches in Dinteloord. Then all groups of aircraft carried out so-called "strafings", diving flights with on-board machine guns. As a result, unquenchable fires broke out in many places in Dinteloord. Buildings collapsed and entire streets disappeared. The inferno took the lives of many residents. The survivors fled in long columns into the safe marshland.Liberation felt sour when the next day British troops under Canadian command entered the almost totally destroyed village. Immediately, the liberators organised medical aid and evacuated the survivors. Almost fifty inhabitants did not live to see the liberation. The attack on Dinteloord was a poignant example of 'collateral damage' during Allied operations in North Brabant.To this day, in Dinteloord, Saturday 4 November is regarded as the day of "the bombing" of their village.

Immediately, the liberators organised medical aid and evacuated the survivors. Almost fifty inhabitants did not live to see the liberation. The attack on Dinteloord was a poignant example of 'collateral damage' during Allied operations in North Brabant.To this day, in Dinteloord, Saturday 4 November is regarded as the day of "the bombing" of their village. &nbsp;Am frühen Samstagmorgen des 4. Die Überlebenden flüchteten in langen Kolonnen in den sicheren Polder.Die Befreiung fühlte hatte einen bitteren Beigeschmack, als am nächsten Tag britische Truppen unter kanadischem Kommando in das fast völlig zerstörte Dorf einrückten. Sofort organisierten die Befreier medizinische Hilfe und evakuierten die Überlebenden. Fast fünfzig Einwohner erlebten die Befreiung nicht mehr. Der Angriff auf Dinteloord war ein ergreifendes Beispiel für "Kollateralschäden" während der alliierten Operationen in Nordbrabant.Bis heute wird in Dinteloord Samstag, der 4. Tanks were ready for when the breakthrough was achieved.The Alqonquins set out in the night and initially encountered little resistance. Eine treffende Schlussfolgerung!Was geschah bei den kanadischen Versuchen, Welberg und Steenbergen einzunehmen? Zwei Tage später unternahmen die Kanadier einen weiteren Versuch, Welberg einzunehmen. Trotz eines größeren Anmarsches kam es am 3. November in dem Weiler erneut zu heftigen Kämpfen mit vielen Verlusten an Männern und Fahrzeugen sowohl auf kanadischer als auch auf deutscher Seite. Erst als sich die deutsche Nachhut in Richtung Dinteloord zurückzog, gelang es den Kanadiern, Welberg und Steenbergen einzunehmen. Na de bevrijding van Moerstraten bereikten de Canadese troepen op 30 oktober de toenmalige gemeentegrens met Steenbergen waar Welberg deel van uitmaakte. Maar weinig Canadezen wisten in het donker te ontsnappen.De mislukking was voornamelijk te wijten was aan onvoldoende verkenning vooraf, een onderschatting van de tegenstander en veel te weinig steun van tanks en artillerie. In éen van de oorlogsdagboeken van de 4th Canadian Armoured Division schreef men: ‘de vijand heeft opnieuw laten zien een expert te zijn in het terugtrekken; sterke achterhoedes achterlaten en zo tijd winnen om op een andere plaats weer een afweerlinie op te bouwen’. Een treffende conclusie!&nbsp;Hoe liep het verder af met de Canadese pogingen Welberg en Steenbergen in te nemen? Twee dagen later ondernamen de Canadezen een nieuwe poging Welberg in te nemen. Ondanks een grotere aanpak kwam het op 3 november opnieuw tot hevige gevechten in de buurtschap met veel verliezen van mensen en voertuigen, zowel aan de Canadese als Duitse zijde. Pas toen de Duitse achterhoede zich richting Dinteloord terugtrok, lukt het de Canadezen Welberg en Steenbergen in te nemen.

After the vanguard of the Canadian 2nd Infantry Division reached the crossroads on 8 October 1944, German resistance rapidly increased in intensity. The final objective for the day was the slightly northern hamlet of Korteven. After all, whoever controlled Korteven controlled access to Zeeland.Realising this, the German army command sent reinforcements to Hoogerheide and the surrounding area at lightning speed. The Canadian forces therefore failed to reach Korteven on the first day. The resistance was 'extremely heavy' and the front Canadian positions along the Antwerpsestraatweg were even lost. The German troops drove the Canadian forces back to the crossroads on the north side of Hoogerheide. Both sides dug in, waiting to see what would happen next.The next day, fighting erupted again around the crossroads. Both sides deployed all available resources. The Devastated Corner

After the vanguard of the Canadian 2nd Canadian Infantry Division reached the crossroads on 8 October 1944, German resistance rapidly increased in intensity. The final objective for the day was the slightly northern hamlet of Korteven. After all, whoever controlled Korteven controlled access to Zeeland.Realising this, the German army command sent reinforcements to Hoogerheide and the surrounding area at lightning speed. The Canadians therefore failed to reach Korteven on the first day. The resistance was 'extremely heavy' and the front Canadian positions along the Antwerpsestraatweg were even lost. The German troops drove the Canadians back to the mentioned crossroads on the north side of Hoogerheide. Both sides dug in, waiting to see what would happen next. The next day, fighting erupted again around the crossroads. Both sides deployed all available resources. Young German paratroopers even drove the Canadians back to the beginning of Raadhuisstraat, the south side of village, on Monday 9 October.But the next day, the Canadians in turn, with support from tanks and artillery, drove the Germans back towards the crossroads. A new German counterattack followed. There was literally fighting around every house even in cellars the battle continued. The street fighting had unprecedented ferocity by Dutch standards. Dozens of soldiers on both sides died in what the German army command described as "bitter house fights in Hoogerheide".By the fourth day, Wednesday 11 October, the fighting subsided; both sides were exhausted. Nachdem die Vorhut der 2. kanadischen Infanteriedivision am 8. Oktober 1944 die Kreuzung erreicht hatte, nahm der deutsche Widerstand rasch an Intensität zu. Das letzte Ziel des Tages war der etwas nördlich gelegene Weiler Korteven. Denn wer Korteven kontrollierte, kontrollierte den Zugang zu Zeeland.Die deutsche Heeresleitung war sich dessen bewusst und schickte in Windeseile Verstärkungen nach Hoogerheide und in die Umgebung. Den Kanadiern gelang es daher nicht, Korteven bereits am ersten Tag zu erreichen. Der Widerstand war "extrem schwer" und die vorderen kanadischen Stellungen entlang des Antwerpsestraatwegs gingen sogar verloren. Die deutschen Truppen drängten die Kanadier bis zu der erwähnten Kreuzung an der Nordseite der Hoogerheide zurück. Beide Seiten verschanzten sich und warteten ab, was als nächstes passieren würde. Am nächsten Tag brachen die Kämpfe rund um die Kreuzung erneut aus. Beide Seiten setzten alle verfügbaren Mittel ein. Junge deutsche Fallschirmjäger drängten die Kanadier am Montag, dem 9. Oktober, sogar bis zum Beginn der Raadhuisstraat, der Südseite des Dorfes, zurück.Doch am nächsten Tag drängten die Kanadier ihrerseits, unterstützt von Panzern und Artillerie, die Deutschen in Richtung der Kreuzung zurück. Es folgte ein neuer deutscher Gegenangriff. Es wurde buchstäblich um jedes Haus gekämpft, sogar in Kellern ging die Schlacht weiter. Die Straßenkämpfe waren von einer für niederländische Verhältnisse beispiellosen Grausamkeit. Dutzende von Soldaten auf beiden Seiten starben in dem, was die deutsche Heeresleitung als "erbitterte Häuserkämpfe in Hoogerheide" bezeichnete.Am vierten Tag, Mittwoch, dem 11. Oktober, flauten die Kämpfe ab; beide Seiten waren erschöpft. Aber zumindest hatten die Kanadier wieder die Kontrolle über das "Verwoeste Hoek". Fast zwei Wochen lang änderte sich die Lage hier nicht. Erst am 23. Oktober war Hoogerheide wirklich sicher, als die 2. kanadische Infanteriedivision eine größere Operation startete und auch Korteven einnahm. Mehr als zwei Wochen später als geplant.Audiogeschichte ‘Mein kanadischer Befreier’Am Antwerpensestraatweg saß der dreizehnjährige Janus van Pul mit seinen Eltern und der Schwester beim Arzt Van de Kar im Schutzkeller. Er erlebte die Gefechte hautnah und hörte wie sie in Wellenbewegungen immer wieder aufflammten. Im Keller fing er einen Blick seines kanadischen Befreiers auf. Nadat op 8 oktober 1944 de voorhoede van de Canadese 2nd Canadian Infantry Division het kruispunt had bereikt, nam de Duitse tegenstand snel in hevigheid toe. Het einddoel voor deze dag was de iets noordelijker gelegen buurtschap Korteven. Wie Korteven in handen had, beheerste immers de toegang naar Zeeland.In dat besef stuurde de Duitse legerleiding razendsnel versterkingen naar Hoogerheide en omgeving. De Canadezen slaagden er daarom de eerste dag niet meer in om Korteven te bereiken. De tegenstand was ‘extreem zwaar’ en de voorste Canadese posities langs de Antwerpsestraatweg gingen zelfs verloren. De Duitse troepen dreven de Canadezen terug tot het genoemde kruispunt aan de noordzijde van Hoogerheide. Beide partijen groeven zich in, in afwachting wat er zou gaan gebeuren. De volgende dag barstte de strijd opnieuw los rond het kruispunt. Beide zijden zetten alle beschikbare middelen in. Jonge Duitse parachutisten dreven op maandag 9 oktober de Canadezen zelfs terug tot aan het begin van de Raadhuisstraat, de zuidkant van dorp.Maar de volgende dag dreven de Canadezen op hun beurt met steun van tanks en artillerie de Duitsers weer terug in de richting van het kruispunt. Een nieuwe Duitse tegenaanval volgde. Er werd letterlijk om elk huis gevochten zelfs in kelders ging de strijd voort. De straatgevechten hadden voor Nederlandse begrippen een ongekende hevigheid. Tientallen militairen aan beide kanten sneuvelden in wat de Duitse legerleiding omschreef als “verbitterde huisgevechten in Hoogerheide”.De vierde dag, woensdag 11 oktober, luwde de strijd, beide partijen waren uitgeput. Maar de Canadezen hadden in ieder geval de ‘Verwoeste Hoek’ weer in handen. Bijna twee weken lang veranderde de situatie hier niet meer. Pas op 23 oktober was Hoogerheide echt veilig toen de 2nd Canadian Infantry Division een grote operatie inzette en ook Korteven innam. Ruim twee weken later dan de bedoeling was geweest.&nbsp;Audio verhaal ‘Mijn Canadese Bevrijder’Aan de Antwerpsestraatweg zat de dertienjarige Janus van Pul met zijn ouders en zus in de schuilkelder bij Dokter Van de Kar. Hij maakte de strijd van dichtbij mee en hoorde de gevechten heen en weer golven. Hij ving in die kelder een glimp op van zijn Canadese bevrijder.
