This fascinating sound experience, via sound installations scattered across the cemetery, takes the visitor out of the daily reality at Ysselsteyn. In doing so, composer duo Strijbos &amp; Van Rijswijk create a moment in which visitors can remember, question and reinterpret their relationship with history. Strijbos &amp; Van Rijswijk withdraw the landscape from everyday reality by 'covering' it with sound. The meaning of Panorama Ysselsteyn is created by an enchanting sound experience that lets the visitor experience the military cemetery in a different way. With Panorama Ysselsteyn, the public is invited to enter an experience where there is room for their own interpretation in a collective experience.

It is only in the past few decades that leading historical research has been published on the subject, allowing us to learn more about it. In France, Prime Minister Lionel Jospin’s speech in 2001 paved the way for the official recognition of the deportation of homosexuals.The exhibition, which draws on various documents, many of which have never been presented in Belgium, aims to answer several questions, situating the persecution of homosexual women and men under the Nazi regime in a broader geographical framework – even though the emphasis is on Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands – and over a longer period of time.Homosexual women and men met different fates. Some elected to go in exile, while others led a double life. In Germany, approximately 50,000 of the 100,000 homosexuals who had been identified by the authorities were convicted: between 5,000 and 15,000 were sent to concentration camps, where the majority died, even though their fate varied significantly depending on the camp to which they were sent and the date of their internment. Lesbians, meanwhile, remained outside the scope of the law, except in certain territories, such as Austria. Some were deported, having been labelled ‘antisocial’ or ‘communist’.In demonstrating the extent of the Nazi persecution and the richness of the gay and lesbian subcultures that existed in the early 20th century, the exhibition takes up the challenge of saving this piece of history from oblivion.It also starts from a scientific premise, because people must fight the untruths that sometimes continue to circulate.Starting with an evocation of the early homosexual movements at the end of the 19th century until the 1930s, the exhibition delves deeper into the persecution of homosexuals, mainly under the Nazi regime and in a European context. It then goes on to present an overview of repression in other countries. Finally, it touches upon the issues of remembrance and recognition since the end of the Second World War and in more recent times.

Belgium

Temporary exhibition: Homosexuals and Lesbians in Nazi Europe

The guided tour recounts German history of the period from a local perspective, supported by multiple biographies and contemporary witness reports that give visitors personal insights into the subject. The one-hour tour provides visitors with detailed information on the former Nazi Party Rallies and the history of the site from 1918 up to the present day. The main parts deal with the propaganda in the thirties and forced labourers and prisoners of war from 1939 to 45.

The indoctrination had an impact on all the activities boys and girls engaged in on a daily basis. Intoxication took place in the home, at school and in the cultural, sporting and educational activities offered by mass movements such as the Hitler-Jugend.The exhibition "Intoxicated! Youth under the Nazi boot" explores a subject rarely tackled, and for the first time presents collections and documents from the reserves of the Alsace-Moselle Memorial.The exhibition echoes the subject of the Concours National de la Résistance et de la Déportation 2022-2023, "Schools and the Resistance, from the dark days to the aftermath of the Liberation (1940-1945)".Guided tours of the exhibition and events around this theme are scheduled throughout the year.

Exhibition "Intoxicated! Youth under the Nazi boot."

The Shoah has been present in Polish visual culture since the 1940s—initially in films, paintings, graphic works, and sculpture, and later in installations, videos, and performances. Such works result from a variety of creative processes—documentation, commemoration, and expressions of sorrow and anger, but also those focused on ritual, the politicized representation of events and individuals, and the manipulation of collective memory.The artists Zuzanna Hertzberg, Paweł Kowalewski, Agnieszka Mastalerz, Natalia Romik, Wilhelm Sasnal, and Zofia Wiślicka &amp; Artur Żmijewski address the multitude of gaps and voids, both material and immaterial, created by the loss of almost the entire Jewish population of Poland. The title of this exhibition refers both to the process of confronting the material evidence of past crimes and to that of identifying the traces of life that no one can any longer embrace.

Materializing: Contemporary Art and the Shoah in Poland

Discover Jean Gabin’s involvement in World War II, eighty years after he enlisted in the United States in April 1943.Inside this exhibition on more than 200m2, the public discover dozens of personal pieces of the actor (including the jacket worn during “La traversée de Paris”), photos and unpublished archives, audiovisual resources … A Tank Destroyer M10, identical to the famous “Souffleur II” led by Jean Gabin at the end of the war, will also be on display. Jean Gabin, a man who constantly refused the easy way. After the 1940 debacle and the beginning of the occupation, many show business personalities stayed in Paris and adapted to the new established order. However, in February 1941, the idea of continuing his profession and his life under these conditions being unbearable to him, Gabin decided to leave for the United States, leaving everything behind. While a career in Hollywood was in his sights, the same desire not to remain “hidden” and to do something for his country animated him when in 1943, he made his request to join the French fighting forces and thus return to the old continent.Jean Gabin becomes Jean Moncorgé again. After shooting The Imposter at the request of General De Gaulle, a propaganda film for the Leclerc army in Africa, his wish was finally granted. He then became a second master in the marine fusiliers under his real name: Jean Moncorgé. An instructor in Algeria during 1944, he finally managed to integrate the Armored Regiment of the Marine Fusiliers, under the direction of General Leclerc, with whom he landed in Brest in January 1945. For the few months of the war that remained, Jean Moncorgé, claustrophobic and pyrophobic, commanded the Souffleur II tank and took part in the fighting in Alsace-Moselle, in the Royan pocket, and then in the capture of Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, in Berchtesgaden.

Exhibition: “Jean Gabin, la guerre c’est pas du cinéma"

The story begins in the 1970s, when Ukrainian visual art began to openly express its own language. From the moment the country's visual language begins to free itself from the imposed yoke of the Soviet Union, Ukrainian photographers make clear how art is at once autonomous and a mirror of the turbulent society in which it is created. Socio-political and artistic life are closely connected in this country. From the Soviet Union and its fall, to the Orange Revolution, the Maidan protests and the current war: the political climate in Ukraine has always been fraught, and this is reflected in the photographers' work.On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion from the south, east and north with missile attacks throughout Ukraine. The still ongoing war completely turned daily life upside down and affected the lives of all Ukrainians, artists, photographers and journalists included. Artists who had never worked in conflict zones turned into war photographers. They had to document the destruction of their hometowns and the violent deaths of their fellow citizens.

'Ukraine: the path to freedom'

Many of the prisoners detained in the house prison were politically persecuted persons, from whose interrogation the Gestapo hoped to gain special insight. Among these individuals were numerous figures of the German resistance, as well as foreign opponents of the Nazi regime. During the interrogations, many prisoners were tortured. Some committed suicide.It is estimated that several thousand prisoners were held in the house prison between 1933 and 1945. For most inmates, the prison represented just one, often the first, stage of a long journey of suffering in detention centres and concentration camps.The exhibition will be presented in the Special Exhibitions Space as well as on the outdoor area of ​​the Topography of Terror Documentation Centre.

“A Special Kind of Police Custody”

“In war, truth is the first casualty.” This ancient wisdom has not lost its meaning. Betrayal played a crucial part in World War II. Secret services utilised wartime misinformation to their benefit, using a network of defected secret agents (or double agents). The Freedom Museum’s temporary exposition Double Agent explains how this was done, starting on Friday, April 27th, 2023.The stories are spectacular. You’ll meet the man who inspired the character James Bond, as well as a man who single-handedly fooled German intelligence services. You’ll learn how the Enigma was cracked, how the attack on Pearl Harbor could have been prevented, and how double agents caused the Normandy landings to become historical successes. Pictures, videos and authentic objects bring the stories to life, with a real Enigma machine as the crown jewel.Double Agent is an exciting, experience-oriented exposition full of adventure and history. Visitors wander through the 1940s, discovering new stories and uncovering new mysteries behind each door. You’ll crack a code in a prison cell, gamble at the casino and learn how to fool enemies at a military headquarters. This journey through the history of betrayal leads to the present: are there still real double agents today? How does misinformation work? Would you recognise fake news?The temporary exposition Double Agent is a meaningful and unmissable experience. It runs from April 27th, 2023 up to and including January 7th, 2024 at the Freedom Museum in Groesbeek.

From June 21 to November 3, the Mémorial des martyrs de la Déportation, located on the Île de la Cité in Paris, is hosting an exhibition designed by the European Centre of deported resistance members. It provides an insight into the history of the Konzentrationslager (KL) Natzweiler, a site which was the scene of Nazi barbarism.
