As part of the commemoration of Operation Market Garden in 1944, parachute jumps by the Round Canopy Parachuting Team The Netherlands (RCPT) will again take place in Eerde this year. The paratroopers of this team will make the jump on Tuesday 17 September. They will land in drop zone A, at the Koeveringsedijk in Eerde. It was here that the first paratroopers set foot on Dutch soil during Operation Market Garden, before taking control of and defending the four bridges in Veghel. There will be several loads of jumpers.Weather-dependentThe time of the jumps will be announced at a later date. The organisation invites everyone to come and watch these commemorative jumps. Please note that times may change at the last minute, as the jumps are weather-dependent. Visitors are asked to come on foot or by bike as much as possible.International parachutist teamThe RCPT is an international parachutist team whose members include 26 nationalities and various representations. The Dutch branch is based in Eerde. The team organises parachute jumps to commemorate those who fought for our freedom. In the style as they also jumped during D-Day and Operation Market Garden in 1944, with authentic uniforms and from C47s (Dakotas).

With the performance ‘We'll meet again’, singing trio The Forces Sweethearts reflects on 80 years of freedom in the Netherlands. Memories are brought to life thanks to beautiful stories and anecdotes from the time surrounding World War II. All this will be framed musically by music from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Think of the big hits by Vera Lynn, Doris Day and, of course, The Andrews Sisters. Do you remember them? ‘Bei mir bist du schon’, ‘Rum and coca cola’, ‘Those were the days’ and of course ‘We'll meet again’! Thanks to their beautiful three-part vocals, swinging dance moves and stylish outfits, The Forces Sweethearts will make this performance a feast of recognition and allow us to reflect together on this special milestone.

A great range of lectures for lovers of local history! Those interested in the stories of the Second World War will have an extra treat this year with lectures by Christ Klep (known from the NOS Liberation News, among others), Erwin van Loo and Kees Slager. These walking routes are named after local resistance fighters; Henri van der Putt, Harrie van Gestel and Jan Heurkens.You can choose from:- Henri van der Putt 4 miles, a commemorative run through the city centre past monuments;- Harrie van Gestel 8 miles, a run mostly through the greenery in Geldrop towards Mierlo;- Jan Heurkens 10 miles, the longest run through the same greenery in Geldrop-MierloThe start times of the walks are between 9.00 - 9.15 (10 miles) 10.00 - 10.15 (8 miles) and 11.30 - 11.45 (4 miles)Also new is the association/school run as part of the Kidsrun. The association or school from Geldrop or Mierlo with the most participants up to 14 years will win a fantastic prize, namely a big cup. Inspired by a true story, you will experience this extraordinary period through the eyes of a former resident of the museum. As a young boy, he lived in the Open Air Museum during the evacuation of Arnhem. His voice guides you through the park, past 37 light projections, each depicting memories from that period. How did these people live? How did they get food? Did they have a kitchen? Did they have to work? Did children go to school?

<h2>80 YEARS OF FREEDOM - WAR IN THE BETUWE</h2>Bus tour by the Nijmegen Guild through the Betuwe, explaining the events in the period September 1944 to April 1945. The tour will be preceded by a lecture at the House of Nijmegen History in the Mariënburg Chapel.September 1944 marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden. However, the operation failed partly because the Rhine Bridge in Arnhem was not captured. As a result, the front ended up in the Betuwe. Due to the heavy fighting, houses and infrastructure were destroyed; looting took place and part of the Betuwe was flooded.We are organising a day trip for those people, who want to know more about those events on 21, 22, 28 and 29 September and on 5, 6, 12 and 13 October. The day will start at 10.00 in the Marienburg Chapel (Marienburg 26) in Nijmegen with a lecture and then there will be a bus tour of the West Betuwe in the morning, then lunch and a bus tour of the East Betuwe in the afternoon. Our guides will tell about the battles and personal stories of people from the Betuwe. Between 16:30 and 17:00, you will return to the Marienburg Chapel. Lunch is included in the price. By means of a booklet, which will be handed out to you, you can follow the route and a short summary of the stories.Participation fee: € 25.00 to € 35.00The bus tours will be repeated on 21, 22, 28 and 29 September and on 5, 6, 12 and 13 October.

Martin tower Liberation routesThe Martinus tower in the small town of Gennep is a permanent reminder of WW2 and lets us know that peace and freedom cannot be taken for granted. It is the only tower on the Meuse River from Mook to Roermond that survived the war. When retreating behind the Meuse, the Wehrmacht blew up the church towers on the left bank of the Meuse and placed lookouts in the towers on the right bank of the Meuse. These towers were then smashed by Allied artillery. All but one: the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.liberationroute.com/pois/787/martinus-tower">Gennep's Martinus tower</a>.The tower was on the front line from September 1944 to February 1945. Had one been in the spire in September 1944, one would have seen thousands of paratroopers and hundreds of Gliders land over neighbouring Groesbeek as part of Operation Market Garden. On 8 February, the front moved again. More than 1,000 guns shelled the neighbouring Reichswald forest and one could have watched from the tower as a roller of steel and fire swept across the great forest. Operation Veritable, the last major battle on the western front, had begun.Today, the Martinus Tower is a visitor centre with many reminders of this time. In particular, the Martinus Tower Liberation Routes, with starting and finishing points at the Martinus Tower, show the numerous traces of the tough battle in the region. The routes include the largest and second largest war museums in the Netherlands (Overloon and Groesbeek). The British Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery and Kriegsgräberstätte Donsbrügen, among others, are located in and near the Reichswald.
