Ten days after the landing, the risk of being thrown into the sea by the Germans still worries the Allies. As a result, they continued to bombard strategic positions, road intersections, communications nodes and railway tracks to delay any reinforcement of German troops. It was in Evrecy aera that the group of the 12e SS Panzer Division commanded by Kurt Meyer joined on June 7, the 21st Panzer with a mission to “sweep the enemy forces infiltrated west of the Orne”.Between Caumont-L'Éventé and Caen, where German armoured troops have gathered, the village of Evrecy is part of the objectives of Bomber Command. During the Battle of Normandy, Evrecy is the commune of Normandy with the highest proportion of civilian casualties given its population. Dix jours après le débarquement, les Alliés craignaient toujours d’être repoussé à la mer par les Allemands. En conséquence, ils continuaient à bombarder les positions stratégiques, les intersections routières, les nœuds de communication et les voies ferrées espérant ainsi retarder tout renforcement des troupes allemandes. Dans la région d’Évrecy, le groupe de la 12ème division SS Panzer commandé par Kurt Meyer rejoignit la 21ème division le 7 juin, visant à balayer les forces ennemies infiltrées à l’ouest de l’Orne.Entre Caumont-L'Éventé et Caen, où s’étaient rassemblées les troupes blindées allemandes, le village d'Évrecy faisait partie des objectifs du RAF Bomber Command. Dans la nuit du 14 au 15 juin, entre 3h00 et 3h20, des dizaines de tonnes de bombes furent larguées sur le village normand. Un tiers des habitants du village furent tués pendant leur sommeil. Pendant la bataille de Normandie, Évrecy était la commune avec la plus forte proportion de victimes civiles dans toute la Normandie. Évrecy, presque entièrement détruit a dû attendre longtemps sa libération, puisque les Britanniques n'arrivèrent aux ruines du village que le 4 août 1944. The Museum of 4th Commando is a place of remembrance dedicated to the French commandos of D-Day, particularly the 4th Commando, and stands in front of today’s Casino in Ouistreham. The museum's aim is to explain who the commandos were and what they achieved, in order to keep their memory and example alive.Managed by the Amicale des anciens du 1er Bataillon de Fusiliers Marins Commandos, the museum was renovated in 2008 and includes multimedia materials, in particular the projection of archives from the Imperial War Museum of London. Today the museum is at the heart of the D-Day ceremonies and stands close to the Monument of the Flame.This monument was unveiled on 6 June 1984 by President François Mitterand and has become one of the main centres of remembrance in the Sword Beach sector. The chosen site is a former Atlantic Wall blockhouse, surmounted by a French armoured turret taken from the Maginot line. This was one of the structures neutralised by the French on 6 June 1944.The monument, in the form of a flame, symbolises the D-Day landings and carries the names of the 177 marines fusiliers who landed at Colleville-sur-Orne. Opposite the monument are ten headstones bearing the names of ten soldiers who fell at Ouistreham on 6 June 1944. Each of the seven stairs leading to the monument symbolises a fallen commando between the monument and the casino. Finally, a stone structure, the work of the sculptor Petrus, stands above the others and is dedicated to Commander Kieffer.

Devenu le point central des cérémonies du Jour J, ce musée est installé à proximité du mémorial de la Flamme.Ce dernier, inauguré le 6 juin 1984 par le Président François Mitterand, est aujourd'hui l'un des principaux lieux de mémoire du secteur de Sword Beach. Le site choisi est un ancien blockhaus du Mur de l'Atlantique, surmonté d'une coupole de tir récupérée sur la ligne Maginot. Dziś jest sercem obchodów 6 czerwca. W jego pobliżu wnosi się Pomnik Płomienia odsłonięty 6 czerwca 1984r. przez Prezydenta Francois Mitteranda. Pomnik ten stał się jednym z głównych punktów pamięci sektora „Sword”. Wybrane dlań miejsce to obiekt fortyfikacji Wału Atlantyckiego, na którym postawiono wieżyczkę pancerną z linii Maginota. Bunkier ten był jednym z obiektów zneutralizowanych przez Francuzów w dniu 6 czerwca 1944r. Pomnik w kształcie płomienia, symbolizujący lądowania D-Day, jest dziełem artystki z Caen, Yvonne Guegan. Na metalowych elementach pomnika “La Flamme” wyryto nazwiska 177 fizylierów morskich, którzy wylądowali w Colleville-sur-Orne. Naprzeciwko pomnika postawiono dziesięć stel z nazwiskami dziesięciu żołnierzy poległych pod Ouistreham 6 czerwca 1944r. Każdy z siedmiu biegów schodów prowadzących do pomnika symbolizuje komandosa poległego na terenie pomiędzy pomnikiem, a kasynem. Nad stallami góruje stela z kamienia autorstwa rzeźbiarza Petrusa, poświęcona pamięci Komandora Kieffer’a. The Utah Beach Landings Museum, which opened its doors to the public in 1962, was built on the site of the former German strongpoint that was eliminated by the U.S. assault force on D-Day. It has been extended and renovated since and reopened its doors in 2011. The museum features a wide range of German and American war items related to the military engagements which took place during the D-Day landing on the morning of 6 June 1944 on Utah Beach.The 4th U.S. Infantry Division and its 8th Infantry Regiment are especially emphasised, as they were the first to set foot on this beach. A reconstruction of the moments that made history is created around an American landing craft. Attention is paid in particular to the U.S. Corps of Engineers who cleared the beach of dangerous obstacles and fatal traps set up by the German forces.War-related objects and pictures remind us that this beach also played a major role in the war of logistics. Indeed, the flat bottomed landing crafts could easily be driven ashore at low tide to unload their freight and transport troops before taking to the open sea at high tide. A space is also dedicated to the 101st U.S. Airborne Division which liberated the area of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont where the museum stands. Finally, the museum features a rare Martin B26 G ‘Marauder’, an American twin-engined medium bomber. This plane is the central exhibit of the museum, as no more than six of them can be found in the world. A reconstruction of the moments that made history is created around an American landing craft. Particular attention is paid to the U.S. Corps of Engineers who cleared the beach of dangerous obstacles and fatal traps set up by the German forces.

War related objects and pictures remind us that this beach also played a major role in the war of logistics. Indeed, the flat bottomed landing crafts could easily be driven ashore at low tide to unload their freight and transport troops before taking to the open sea at high tide. A space is also dedicated to the 101st U.S. Airborne Division which liberated the area of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont where the museum stands.

Finally, the museum features a rare Martin B26 G ‘Marauder’, an American twin-engined medium bomber. This plane is the central exhibit of the museum, as no more than six of them can be found in the world. It stands as a reminder of the crucial contribution of Allied Air Forces, and as a salute to their victories during and following the Utah Beach landing.

The deep-water port of Cherbourg was absolutely vital to the success of the Allied troops on the continent. Possession of the port would enable American ships to navigate directly from the United States to mainland Europe. After the U.S. troops landed on Utah Beach on 6 June 1944, the Germans blocked the road to Cherbourg. Montebourg was conquered after fierce fighting and was almost completely destroyed in the process. The Americans decided to isolate Cherbourg by cutting off the Cotentin peninsula. On 18 June 1944, they reached Barneville on the west coast of the Cotentin. Approximately 40.000 Germans were closed in. Some of them surrendered, but the majority retreated around Cherbourg. The Americans rushed towards the city, where they encountered heavy resistance. Massive bombing by Allied aircraft and warships weakened the German defences. On 26 June, the Americans managed to seize Fort du Roule, an imposing fortification perched on a hill overlooking the harbour. On the same day General von Schlieben surrendered to General Collins. The city was almost intact, but the port facilities were completely destroyed by the Germans. Still, after extensive emergency repairs the first ships were able to use the harbour by late July. The museum located at Fort du Roule reminds us of the occupation and liberation of the Cotentin peninsula, as well as the role played by the port of Cherbourg in the Allied operations. Situated 117 meters above sea level, it offers a breath-taking view of the harbour.

During the summer of 1944 Cherbourg was the most important harbour in the world. For the Allies it was the vital gateway to Europe, indispensable for supplying their campaign in Western Europe. Despite fierce German resistance, U.S. troops seized the city on 26 June 1944. The Liberation Museum reminds us of this dramatic episode.

Montebourg was conquered after fierce fighting and was almost completely destroyed in the process. The Americans decided to isolate Cherbourg by cutting off the Cotentin peninsula. On 18 June 1944, they reached Barneville on the west coast of the Cotentin. Approximately 40.000 Germans were closed in. Some of them surrendered, but the majority retreated around Cherbourg. The Americans rushed towards the city, where they encountered heavy resistance.

Massive bombing by Allied aircraft and warships weakened the German defences. On 26 June, the Americans managed to seize Fort du Roule, an imposing fortification perched on a hill overlooking the harbour. On the same day General von Schlieben surrendered to General Collins. The city was almost intact, but the port facilities were completely destroyed by the Germans. Still, after extensive emergency repairs the first ships were able to use the harbour by late July.

The museum located at Fort du Roule reminds us of the occupation and liberation of the Cotentin peninsula, as well as the role played by the port of Cherbourg in the Allied operations. Situated 117 meters above sea level, it offers a breath-taking view of the harbour.

This command post was built in a former stone quarry transformed into an underground military installation. Located 15 km from the beaches, it consists of a long 70m tunnel. General Richter’s office was located in the centre. On either side were the rooms reserved for the staff, the transmission room, the map room, the telephone switchboard connected by underground cables to the coast, to the aerodrome of Carpiquet, and at the Central Post Office which was in a blockhouse in Caen. On 6 June, at 00:40, Richter was informed by telephone of the presence of paratroopers and gliders east of the Orne and put his division on alert.&nbsp;At 02h00, the Allies began to bomb the support points and the coastal batteries.&nbsp;Less than 5 hours later, the first waves of assault landed.&nbsp;Anglo-Canadian troops brought down the positions held by the 716th division and infiltrated between Bayeux and Caen.&nbsp;&nbsp; At 3:30 Richter and his staff decided to join the underground HQ north of Caen. At 10:45 the commander of the 84th Corps, general Marcks coming from Saint-Lô joined this command post to reorganize the counterattack against the airborne bridgehead to the East of the Orne.&nbsp;On the evening a crisis meeting was organized between generals Richter, Feuchtinger (21st Panzer Division) and Kurt Meyer, (25th Armoured Regiment of the 12th SS), to prepare a counter-offensive for the next day.&nbsp;The decision was taken of a counter-attack led by Kurt Meyer and his tanks to ban the British from the airfield of Carpiquet.&nbsp;A few days later, the command post will be abandoned in the face on the intensity of fighting north of Caen and aerial bombardments.&nbsp;Today an evocation of the former HQ of general Richter is part of the visit of the Caen Mémorial built just above in 1988.

The command post consists of a long 70m tunnel, served by three chicane access corridors. In 1944, the main part was partitioned into 12 rooms that communicated with each other with in its center Richter’s office.

Ten days after the Allied D-Day landing, the situation of the German forces in the Cotentin became critical: the Cotentin Peninsula was about to be cut in half by the Allies. Facing the threat of being trapped, Hitler allowed General von Schlieben on 17 June 1944 to withdraw to the north to ensure the defense of Cherbourg-en-Contentin and the northern part of the peninsula.On the night of June 17 to 18, the 9th Division reached the Contentin west coast at Barneville-sur-Mer. Tourlaville and Equeurdreville fell in turn.On June 26, the Americans, guided by the local population, entered Cherbourg. They captured von Schlieben, Admiral Walter Hennecke, and 800 German soldiers. The capture of Cherbourg cost the 7th American Corps 3,000 dead, 3,000 missing, and 13,500 wounded. At the end of the Battle of the Cotentin, with the last surrenders on July 1 at Cap de La Hague, the German forces had lost 11,000 dead and 39,000 prisoners.Cherbourg-en-Contentin became the first French port liberated by the American forces. On 16 July 1944, the first large ships could dock there providing supplies for the Allied advance in the Battle of Normandy.

On the night of 23 and 24 June, 1944, the ferry terminal was blown by the Germans. The general order was to destroyed every city’s port facilities before surrending to the Allies.

The Battle of Cherbourg 

Dix jours après le débarquement, la situation des forces allemandes dans la péninsule du Cotentin devint critique. La zone était sur le point d’être coupée en deux par les Alliés. Face à la menace d'un piège, Hitler permit au général Von Schlieben de se retirer vers le nord le 17 juin afin d’assurer la défense de Cherbourg-en-Contentin et de toute la partie nord de la péninsule. Dans la nuit du 17 au 18 juin, la 9ème division d’infanterie américaine atteignit la côte ouest. La péninsule fut coupée en deux, de Quinéville à Barneville. 30 000 soldats allemands furent piégés.Le 19 juin, les défenses de Montebourg s'étaient effondrées et la 79ème division d’infanterie occupa Valognes dans la soirée. Les 4ème, 9ème et 79ème divisions américaines atteignirent les défenses extérieures d’Cherbourg. Nommé commandant de la forteresse de Cherbourg par Hitler, Général Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben rejeta l’ultimatum du général américain Joseph Lawton Collins qui lui demanda de se rendre le 22 juin. Suivant les ordres du Führer, son intention était de défendre le port et la ville jusqu’au dernier homme. Les premiers bombardements aériens furent ensuite menés sur les points fortifiés du port. As the front line moved away from Caen, the Lycée Malherbe gradually emptied of its refugees, leaving the municipal services and allied authorities to organise the return to normal life of thousands of inhabitants, in a city largely destroyed, and bereaved.&nbsp;

However, for technical reasons, the truck with the mobile transmitter was prohibited from embarking on the journey. A few days later, further difficulties arose in the distribution of transmitters, generators, amplifiers, microphones and other antennas, made complicated by the storms starting around 17 June.It was not until 19 June that all the equipment was landed at Arromanches. It was on this day that the first reports were successfully broadcasted from this tower at the Chateau to London. From this studio broadcasts were made by war correspondents of all nationalities. This included Frank Gillard, head of the BBC team in Creully, Pierre Lefèvre, French correspondent, Robin Duff for the American forces and the Australiann Chester Wilmot.This BBC studio stopped broadcasting on 21 July 1944, as other mobile studios had been installed towards the interior of Normandy after the capture of Caen and with the advance of the front. Château de Creully was also used as headquarters of General Montgomery.Today Château de Creully houses the BBC Radio Museum, immersing visitors in the world of war correspondents, communications and radio. This museum, which offers collections from the 1920s to the 1980s, is set up in part of the upper rooms of the castle, in four distinct spaces, up to the square tower where most war correspondents first begun to cover the Battle of Normandy.

This museum, which offers collections from the 1920s to the 1980s, is set up in part of the upper rooms of the castle, in four distinct spaces, up to the square tower where most war correspondents first begun to cover&nbsp;the Battle of Normandy.

The Battery of Azeville can be found 7 km from Sainte-Mère-Eglise in Normandy. Built in 1941, it is one of the first buildings of the Atlantic Wall in France. The underground passageways and bunkers, which maintain some of their original camouflage, can be visited with a guided tour.

The Radar Museum in Douvres was built on the grounds of a former bunker. The museum presents the history of the site and the use of radar during the Second World War. It features two different rooms detailing the story of Douvres during the Nazi occupation, the liberation of the site and de-mining operations.

Das Musée Radar 1944 in Douvres wurde auf dem Gelände eines ehemaligen Bunkers errichtet. Die Ausstellung dokumentiert die Entwicklung der Radarstation sowie den Einsatz von Radar im Zweiten Weltkrieg. In zwei verschiedene Räumen werden die Geschichte von Douvres während der NS-Besatzung, die Befreiung der Station und die Minenräumungsaktionen detailliert dargestellt.

​​An exhibition in the information centre uses examples to document what people suffered through during the war. It describes their fates and lets people have their say. The images and stories of death, suffering, destruction and war graves are juxtaposed with hopeful examples of reconciliation, understanding and friendship.Today, 21,245 German soldiers have found their resting place in La Cambe. 207 unknown dead and 89 who are known by name are laid to rest in the burial mound.In the summer of 1944, more than 100,000 people died during the fighting that followed the Allied landings in Normandy. At least 14,000 French civilians lost their lives. Even as the fighting in Normandy continued, the American Recovery and Identification Service already laid out two large cemeteries with both their own and German fallen, near the small village of La Cambe. After 1945, the American forces transferred their dead to the cemetery of St. Laurent-sur-Mer, 15 kilometres away. The bodies of the German soldiers were exhumed there and buried in La Cambe.​In 1954, at the beginning of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge's (German War Graves Commission) reburial work, La Cambe cemetery was already one of the largest provisional German military cemeteries of the Second World War in France, with about 8,000 dead. Subsequently, the remains of 12,000 German soldiers from 1,400 graves, as well as another 700 bodies found at scattered war sites in Normandy, were interred at La Cambe. On 21 September 1961, the La Cambe War Cemetery was officially inaugurated.​In 1957, an international youth camp took place under the motto "Reconciliation over the Graves". This was the first time that young people from several nations helped the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge to establish a war grave site in France. Next to the cemetery is Peace Park, opened by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge in 1996. Here, 1,200 spherical maple trees grow as living symbols of peace and reconciliation. La Cambe was the first peace park of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge. In the following years, three more were built in Budaörs (Hungary) and Sologubovka (Russia).Accessibility information:​The barrier-free access to the cemetery was completed in 2012. A direct connection to the bus car park makes it possible to reach the war grave site by a short route and without much effort. The cemetery of La Cambe is located near Omaha Beach. With around 21.200 graves it is the largest and best known German military cemetery in Normandy. In contrast to the Allied cemeteries, the setting is simple and sober, creating a serenity that urges the living to live in peace.

Of the six German military cemeteries in Normandy, La Cambe, counting 21.200 graves, is the largest and best known. The other German cemeteries are (in order of importance): Champigny/Saint-André-de-l’Eure, Mont-de-Huines, Marigny, Orglandes and Saint-Désir-de-Lisieux. In total, the remains of 80.000 German soldiers are buried in Normandy. Some soldiers died already before the Battle of Normandy, some in captivity thereafter.

The La Cambe cemetery dates from the summer of 1944, when the U.S. Army established two temporary cemeteries on the battlefield near the village of La Cambe, one reserved for U.S. soldiers, the other for the Germans.

After the war, the American Battle Monuments Commission decided to gather the remains of the U.S. soldiers in the cemetery of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. In the 1950’s, the administration of German cemeteries was entrusted to the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, a private humanitarian organization, charged by the Federal Republic of Germany with taking care of the German war dead abroad, under the motto ‘Versöhnung über den Gräbern’ (‘reconciliation above the graves’). An internationally sponsored peace park with 1.200 maple trees was completed in 2009.

Like other German military cemeteries of the two world wars, La Cambe reflects the status of the defeated. Unlike Allied cemeteries, the crosses and headstones are of a dark tone, in accordance with what the Treaty of Versailles had already established in 1919 for cemeteries of the First World War. The bucolic character of the present cemetery urges the visitors to live in peace.

​​​Once ashore in Normandy, General Montgomery, Commander of the 21st Army Group was responsible for all Allied ground forces. He wanted to be as close as possible to the front line of his units.​After various locations were considered, it was the Château de Creullet, in the valley of the Seulles, that was selected, on the bank opposite the village of Creully. It was here that his mobile command post was setup. On the large lawns at the back of the castle, he installed the three trailers, forming his tactical headquarters from 8 June 1944.At the boundary of the British sector of Gold, and Canadian sector of Juno, the village of Creully was liberated on the afternoon of 6 June by Canadian troops. Later, British troops moved into the village. The bridge over the river was to form a crossing point frequently used by Allied troops during the Battle of Normandy to advance south. Its proximity to the Lantheuil field aerodrome, once constructed, would only strengthen this strategic position of Creully during the summer of 1944.From here, Montgomery coordinated the main phases of the battle. During his stay at the castle, Montgomery was visited by many personalities including the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 12 June, General de Gaulle on 14 June, General Eisenhower, commander in chief of the Allied forces on 15 June, and King George VI on 16 June.​It was also in Creully that the BBC war reporters settled on 7 June before their departure to the nearby Château de Creully as soon as a powerful transmitter were put into service at the top of its square tower.​The location of Montgomery HQ was kept secret until he left for another HQ in Blay, on 22 June 1944. Château de Creullet was spared damage by the war. It is now a private property and cannot be publicly accessed. On occasions its park is sometimes accessible for guided tours.

​​​Once ashore in Normandy, General Montgomery, Commander of the 21st Army Group was responsible for all Allied ground forces. He wanted to be as close as possible to the front line of his units.​After various locations were considered, it was the Château de Creullet, in the valley of the Seulles, that was selected, on the bank opposite the village of Creully. It was here that his mobile command post was setup. On the large lawns at the back of the castle, he installed the three trailers, forming his tactical headquarters from 8 June 1944.At the boundary of the British sector of Gold, and Canadian sector of Juno, the village of Creully was liberated on the afternoon of 6 June by Canadian troops. Later, British troops moved into the village. The bridge over the river was to form a crossing point frequently used by Allied troops during the Battle of Normandy to advance south. Its proximity to the Lantheuil field aerodrome, once constructed, would only strengthen this strategic position of Creully during the summer of 1944.From here, Montgomery coordinated the main phases of the battle. During his stay at the castle, Montgomery was visited by many personalities including the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 12 June, General de Gaulle on 14 June, General Eisenhower, commander in chief of the Allied forces on 15 June, and King George VI on 16 June.​It was also in Creully that the BBC war reporters settled on 7 June before their departure to the nearby Château de Creully as soon as a powerful transmitter were put into service at the top of its square tower.​The location of Montgomery HQ was kept secret until he left for another HQ in Blay, on 22 June 1944. Château de Creullet was spared damage by the war. It is now a private property and cannot be publicly accessed. On occasions its park is sometimes accessible for guided tours. ​​​​The abbey is a 12th-century gothic building located in Saint-Germain-la-Blanche-Herbe, west of Caen, with towers that form an ideal observation point overlooking the area north of Caen and out to sea. On 7 June 1944, Kurt Meyer, leader of the German 25th Panzer Grenadier regiment of the 12th SS, moved his HQ here, in part due to this view.​That day, in the midst of the Battle of Caen, Meyer could see from atop the abbey that the Canadian troops were progressing, and so decided to launch his counter-attack. The troops of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders were launched into the Battle of Authie, a nearby village. The battalion of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division left Buron on the morning of 7 June, in the direction of Carpiquet and its airfield.​During the fighting at Authie, held by German troops in the afternoon, 84 Canadian soldiers and seven civilians were killed. Twenty Canadian soldiers were taken prisoner and sent to the Abbaye d’Ardennes: eleven of these were executed that afternoon and buried in the abbey’s gardens, while the others were taken to Bretteville-sur-Odon. Five of the eleven men who were executed belonged to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, the other six to the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment (Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment). On 8 June 1944, seven additional prisoners of war from the North Nova Scotia Highlanders were taken to the abbey and interrogated by the SS, before being executed with a shot to the head. It was only in late winter that year, and early spring of 1945, that the bodies of all the soldiers were recovered. The crimes were attributed to Meyer’s unit. &nbsp;​The abbey, severely damaged by the fighting, was taken by the Canadian Army in the evening of 8 July. Years later, on 6 June 1984, a memorial was unveiled in the garden where the tragedy took place, near the southwest wall. The memorial garden was set up by the Canadian authorities, with the help of the Vico family who lived there during the occupation and even after the war. The garden has an oratory, in memory of the eighteen soldiers massacred there by the SS, and every year on 7 June a commemoration is organised there.​A total of 156 Canadian soldiers were executed by the 12th SS in the days and weeks following D-Day.​​​

Ouvert depuis 2003, le Centre Juno Beach est situé face à la plage de Courseulles-sur-Mer, sur l'un des bastions qui protégeaient l'entrée du port et que la 3e division canadienne dut neutraliser le 6 juin 1944. Plus qu'un musée dédié au débarquement du Jour J, il s'agit d'un lieu de mémoire représentant une nation toute entière. Il commémore la participation du Canada à la Seconde Guerre mondiale et son importante contribution à la libération de l'Europe de l'Ouest. En guerre aux côtés des États-Unis dès septembre 1939, le Canada avait fourni un effort considérable en mobilisant toutes ses ressources économiques et humaines. Après une rapide transformation industrielle, il était devenu, avec les États-Unis, « le grand arsenal de la démocratie ». Malgré la restauration de la conscription, le Canada n'envoya que des volontaires à l'étranger. Les souvenirs douloureux de la Première Guerre mondiale suscitaient en effet des tensions entre les anglophones et les francophones sur cette question. Plus d'un million de Canadiens furent mobilisés pendant le conflit, soit presque la moitié des hommes en âge de porter les armes. Finalement, le pays sortit de la guerre transformé, tout en ayant préservé son unité nationale. Le Centre Juno Beach offre aux visiteurs un aperçu exhaustif des efforts de guerre du Canada, à travers six salles d'exposition à thème. Un film émouvant intitulé « Dans leurs pas » permet à chacun de s'identifier à l'histoire d'un soldat d'infanterie canadien. Das Centre Juno Beach vermittelt dem Besucher in sechs thematischen Ausstellungsräumen einen Überblick über die umfangreichen, von Kanada im Krieg unternommenen Anstrengungen. Beim Betrachten eines emotionsgeladenen Films mit dem Titel „Dans leurs pas“ („In ihren Fußspuren“) kann man sich in das Schicksal eines einzelnen kanadischen Infanteristen hineinversetzen. In the district of La Maladrerie, the quarry located 15 metres underground under the ‘Pépinières Kaskoreff’ was taken over from 16 June 1944, with the agreement of the German forces.At the beginning of July, more than 500 people found refuge there. Emergency teams took charge of straw bedding and supplies for the civillians. Some of the refugees would come just&nbsp;to spend the night in safety, before returning home the next day.​On 6 June 1944, D-Day, roads around Caen turned into an&nbsp;exodus. It is estimated that 10,000 to 15,000 people left Caen, and some rushed towards the quarries of Carpiquet or those of the Rue des Roches in Mondeville. There, 7,000 to 8,000 refugees crammed together, lit by carbide lamps in cramped conditions.In Fleury-sur-Orne there was vast number of mushroom farms located on the hillsides. These were used as shelters, with around fifteen two-storey galleries several hundred metres deep. The Fouquet, Pochiet or Saingt quarries, named after their owners, also welcomed several thousand civilians until the end of July 1944.As places of refuge, over time the underground quarries proved to be uncomfortable. For everyone, children and adults, infants and the elderly, it meant weeks of daily life in precarious and difficult conditions: it was damp and there was a lack of light, fresh air, lack, and hygiene. Most quarries, especially those in Caen, benefitted from the help of the Red Cross. Additionally, the owners themselves, Equipes d’Urgence (Emergency Teams), Equipes Nationales (National Teams), and volunteers worked alongside each other&nbsp;there daily. In some shelters water and electricity was installed to help with living conditions. By the end of the Battle of Caen, less than 50 people had died in the quarries of Caen, Mondeville, Carpiquet and Fleury-sur-Orne.​Since 2023, the Maladrerie quarries have been open to visitors. Guided tours are organised and supervised by the Quarries Department and the City of Caen.

Captain STAUNTON was formerly a civilian member of the Underground Movement in FRANCE and, after ten months imprisonment as a result of the indiscretion of a comrade (that person was George Langelaan an F Section in Nice, who had arrived on a propaganda mission red.), made good his escape and arrived in ENGLAND in September 1942. On his arrival he was interviewed by an officer of M.O.1 (S.P.) and accepted for further training and employment. He was commissioned in January 1943, and returned to FRANCE in April of the same year. 2. Since his return his group has been responsible for the following operations:&nbsp; a) The sinking of a German 850-900 ton armed minesweeper in the Seine near ROUEN between the moment of its acceptance by the German Admiralty and its putting to sea. All its A.S.D.I.C. equipment and three months' store of food and ammunition were on board. b) An attack on the main Plant of the Compagnie Franciase de Metaux at DELVILLE, an important factory turning out aluminium sheets for the Luftwaffe whereby production was completely stopped for two weeks and reduced 10% for three months. c) An attack on main transformers supplying ROUEN, whereby the transformers were destroyed and 120 tons of oil burnt. d) The derailing of a German leave train whereby 196 Germans were killed and several hundred injured. The success of these attacks were directly due to the care with which Captain STAUNTON had built up his organisation and to the excellent personal reconnaissance of the targets, and the competence with which he handled the men and the material at his disposal. 3. In addition Captain Staunton has submitted an extremely detailed report of enemy preparations for demolitions in the Port of LE HAVRE. 4. Captain STAUNTON returned to ENGLAND in January of this year, but on receipt of news that his group had been the subject of serious penetration by the Gestapo, he immediately volunteered to return in order to investigate and reorganise. He recently left ENGLAND. In recognition of his marked successes, powers of organisation and leadership, coupled with his personal courage and example, I strongly recommend Captain STAUNTON for the award of the Military Cross.​

Since his return his group has been responsible for the following operations:&nbsp; a) The sinking of a German 850-900 ton armed minesweeper in the Seine near ROUEN between the moment of its acceptance by the German Admiralty and its putting to sea. All its A.S.D.I.C. equipment and three months' store of food and ammunition were on board. b) An attack on the main Plant of the Compagnie Franciase de Metaux at DELVILLE, an important factory turning out aluminium sheets for the Luftwaffe whereby production was completely stopped for two weeks and reduced 10% for three months. c) An attack on main transformers supplying ROUEN, whereby the transformers were destroyed and 120 tons of oil burnt. d) The derailing of a German leave train whereby 196 Germans were killed and several hundred injured. The success of these attacks were directly due to the care with which Captain STAUNTON had built up his organisation and to the excellent personal reconnaissance of the targets, and the competence with which he handled the men and the material at his disposal. 3. In addition Captain Staunton has submitted an extremely detailed report of enemy preparations for demolitions in the Port of LE HAVRE. 4. Captain STAUNTON returned to ENGLAND in January of this year, but on receipt of news that his group had been the subject of serious penetration by the Gestapo, he immediately volunteered to return in order to investigate and reorganise. He recently left ENGLAND. In recognition of his marked successes, powers of organisation and leadership, coupled with his personal courage and example, I strongly recommend Captain STAUNTON for the award of the Military Cross.​ La citation de la Croix militaire se lit comme suit .1.
