Fort Frederik Hendrik

This fort was originally constructed during the time of Napoleon. During the Second World War, the German occupiers incorporated it as part of the defence of Stützpunktgruppe Breskens.

The fort was renamed Stützpunkt Hendrik, and many bunkers were built within its grounds. All of these were demolished except for one machine-gun bunker (type 114 neu) — the only intact bunker of this type along the entire Atlantic Wall. The bunker features an armoured turret with six firing ports (6-Schartenturm).

On 11 and 12 October 1944, during the Battle of the Scheldt, the fort was attacked by over two hundred bombers of the British strategic air force, reducing the site to a lunar-like landscape. The bunkers themselves suffered little damage. The strategic air force believed that the Canadian forces were “addicted” to bombardments and that they should be forced to cope without their bomber support.

On 25 October 1944, after heavy fighting and shelling, the fort was captured.

Today, the fort has been transformed into a holiday park. Along Fort Soleil street, the type 112 neu bunker can still be found, currently being restored by the Stichting Festung Walcheren. On Nieuwesluisweg, on agricultural land, a type 630 machine-gun bunker remains. The tactical relationship between these two structures is still visible.
