Naval flak battery Olmen

Named after the dune area “De Olmen,” the anti-aircraft battery Olmen is hidden in the dunes. The Festung IJmuiden was protected against Allied aircraft by a network of anti-aircraft guns. These guns were organized into so-called batteries, which were classified as either light or heavy anti-aircraft batteries. Each heavy battery was equipped with four guns and a fire control post.

The five heavy anti-aircraft batteries were positioned around the Festung to provide optimal defense.

IJmuiden was so heavily defended that, according to reports, Allied pilots marked it as a hotspot on their maps—best avoided due to extremely heavy anti-aircraft fire!

Batterie Olmen consisted of reinforced concrete bunkers for the guns, a fire control post, and ammunition bunkers.

The fire control post contained all the equipment needed to locate and track Allied aircraft. Based on these measurements, the anti-aircraft guns could be aimed accurately. The battery was also equipped with searchlights and modern devices such as radar to detect incoming aircraft.

To pass the time between actions, the naval gunners found ways to relax. A sports field was installed for exercise, and another popular pastime was painting, often depicting domestic scenes.

The bunkers are still present and open to visitors. Old clothes and a good flashlight are recommended. The bunkers are part of a bunker route, and QR codes along the trail allow you to discover the “secrets” of the bunkers online. Guided tours are also available through the Bunker Museum IJmuiden.
