The 'kopje' of Bloemendaal

On the hill known as Het Kopje in Bloemendaal stood an observation post that was part of the Atlantic Wall. From here, the German army had a commanding view over the dunes.

The so-called Widerstandsnest on Het Kopje (also called Wilhelmina Dune) belonged to a mobile anti-aircraft battery located near the restaurant De Uitkijk. Together with other observation points, this battery received targeting instructions from the post on Het Kopje.

The post actually consisted of two parts. The first was a personnel bunker (type 610), which housed soldiers and officers. This was also the headquarters of the Festung Pionier Stab, the fortress engineering unit. The second bunker (type 615sk) was built higher up and served as the observation post.

After the liberation, the observation post on Koninginneduinweg was converted into a lookout tower. On April 25, 1947, a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the structure, describing its wartime history. Today, the post serves as a liberation monument, still offering a panoramic view of Haarlem and the sea.
