During the Allied counter-offensive, Scottish units were tasked with advancing along the Marche-en-Famenne - La Roche-en-Ardenne axis on the left bank of the Ourthe. From their position, they also covered the flank of the advancing units in the Ourthe valley.
Around 9 p.m. on 10 January, Ronchamps was reached and the German rearguard withdrew. The following day, the British troops came under targeted artillery fire, particularly at the village crossroads. The fire was pinpointed at Mierchamps, where the German units had retreated down the valley.
The monument at the Ronchamps crossroads honours the British heroes who fell in the liberation of the region. Their difficult advance through the snow and cold enabled units of the 51st Highland Division to link up with the 84th American Infantry Division at La Roche-en-Ardenne, liberating the town on 11 January 1945.
