Plaque commemorating members of the Resistance murdered at Harre

At the beginning of September 1944, the liberation of the Belgian Ardennes was gradually approaching. The Resistance was still very active in the region, carrying out various support missions. On 3 September, four Resistance fighters were shot in the village of Harre during a supply mission.

On 3 September 1944, the village was surrounded by German troops. One of the chiefs reported that one of their men had been shot. Around 200 armed men criss-crossed the village looking for someone to blame. They searched the houses and found five resistance fighters who had come to get supplies from a house.

The entire population - men, women and children - were ordered to the church, where the executioners carried out an intimidating interrogation. In the end, they chose as martyrs the four resistance fighters in the group who were carrying weapons, and took them further down into the village.

Lined up in front of a low wall, they were gunned down in a hail of gunfire. The plaque affixed to the site pays tribute to the four victims of the barbarity that raged that day.
