The Berkel-Juliana Bridge

The Juliana Bridge is located just a short distance ahead and was originally constructed in 1937. That same year, in honour of Princess Juliana’s marriage to Prince Bernhard, the newly built street south of the bridge was named Bernhardlaan.

During the German occupation, the street was renamed Willem de Zwijgerlaan.

On April 6, 1945, the Germans blew up the Juliana Bridge to hinder the advancing Canadians and prevent Canadian divisions on either side of the Berkel from linking up. Heavy fighting also took place along Prins Bernhardlaan, where eleven houses were destroyed by fire.
