The Ammunition Depot

The site where the Baudartius College now stands was once home to the Isendoornkazerne, a former military barracks built on the grounds of the medieval Isendoorn convent. During the Second World War, the Germans used this location as an ammunition depot, storing weapons and explosives.

On April 7th, 1945, just before retreating to De Hoven, they blew up the depot. The explosion caused severe damage to the surrounding area, destroying several nearby houses.

We can see the remains of the Isendoorn Barracks. Behind them once stood the GOZ laboratory, which was demolished around 2008, as well as the historic Kruittoren ("Powder Tower").

Severe destruction also occurred at the corner of Isendoornstraat and Nieuwstad during the liberation of Zutphen.
