The Germans destroyed all the bridges around the inner city on April 5th and 6th 1945 to retreat into the city. Along Deventerweg, there were 80 foxholes, and German snipers were positioned in the basements of mansions. Fierce fighting raged in this district for two days. On April 7th, the Deventerweg quarter was liberated, and the French Canadians (Régiment de la Chaudière) crossed the destroyed Deventerweg bridge. A day later, Prince Bernhard also drove over the bridge in a jeep into the newly liberated Zutphen. After the war, the bridge was rebuilt and named Canadezenbrug("Canadian Bridge").
