Synagogue Lochem

In the spring of 1943, the last Jews in Lochem were arrested and deported to Westerbork. A small number managed to go into hiding, some in the centre of Lochem, others on the Lochemse Berg.

Their possessions were confiscated by the Germans. A few were able to hide valuables with friends, hoping to retrieve them after the war. The Jewish community’s religious property also ended up stored in an attic in Lochem. After the war, only 18 of the approximately 120 Jewish residents returned. Each year on 4 May, the names of the Jews who perished are read aloud here.
