Willem’s memory is also preserved in another way: on 5 May 2009, at the initiative of one of the people they sheltered, Jonnie Levy, the Willem Geurinkstraat was unveiled in his honour.
Going into hiding with the Geurink family
Willem and Dina Geurink lived with their family on a farm close to the current bridge. During the Second World War, they gave shelter to many people in hiding, including the three Jewish Levy brothers. A hiding place was built for them outside the pigsty, accessible from within via a ladder in the last pen. The entrance was covered by a hatch and camouflaged with straw. The brothers survived the war and were reunited with their parents after the liberation. In recognition of their courageous efforts, Willem and Dina Geurink were honoured with the Yad Vashem award in 1990.
