The war memorial in Mariënberg depicts a mother with her child. As the inscription reads:
“A daughter without a father, a woman without her husband.
The war tore families apart.
The men sent away to work,
the women left behind.
Strong women with grief.”
The monument also bears the names of eight local victims, among them Minister P.H. Wolfert and the resistance fighters Geert Oosterveen and Gerrit Willem Nijboer from Beerzerveld, who were killed in the ‘Battle of the Vosseboer.’ The original statue was unveiled in 1952, but was stolen in 2012. A year later, a replacement statue was installed.
