The Provincial Resistance Monument in Markelo is a memorial honoring 470 resistance fighters from Overijssel who died during World War II in the fight against the occupiers.
In 1946, shortly after the liberation, an initiative was launched to establish a monument in a central location in the province to honor fallen resistance fighters from Overijssel. The monument was created by sculptor Titus Leeser and was unveiled in 1953 by the Queen’s Commissioner.
The sculpture depicts three figures, each representing a different aspect of the resistance: unarmed resistance (on the left), the role of women in the resistance (in the center), and armed resistance (on the right).
