At the Town Hall, Ommen Commemorates the War

One of the most important war memorials in Ommen stands near the town hall. It especially commemorates those who resisted the occupier.

The monument at the Ommen town hall is a natural stone memorial stone featuring a relief of a resistance fighter, a civilian, and a soldier. The monument measures 2 meters high, 2 meters wide, and 35 centimeters deep. In 2015, glass plaques with names were added to both sides of the monument and unveiled on April 11. The monument was designed by Titus Leeser.

This monument essentially symbolizes Ommen’s wartime history regarding the resistance against the occupation. In addition to the efforts of the Allied soldiers, the support from the resistance and the (farming) population was also essential in the lead-up to liberation. The inscription therefore highlights the struggle for freedom:

"IN MEMORY OF THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM AND THE RESISTANCE AGAINST OPPRESSION DURING THE WAR YEARS 1940-1945."
