Maurice Collins Monument

On 7 April 1945, Canadian units crossed the waters of the Schipbeek. The next day, Maurice Collins and his regiment, The Black Watch of Canada, were positioned on the Fliermatenweg in Holten.

Maurice Collins was the son of a Dutch farmer and had fought in fierce battles with The Black Watch regiment in Normandy, Belgium, and Zeeland — where many of his comrades were killed or wounded.

In April 1945, the area arounf the Fliermatenweg remained unstable, with ongoing exchanges of fire between German soldiers and Canadian liberators. Whilst posted here with his regiment, Collins was seriously wounded by enemy fire near the Kolkman family farm (Fliermatenweg 2). He was taken to an already-liberated farm belonging to Jan Albert Schuppert on Russendijk, where a field hospital had been set up. However, there at the age of 24, he succumbed to his injuries.
