The War Memorial in Staphorst

In Staphorst, the victims of World War II are commemorated with a memorial wall on the Binnenweg. It honors those who lost their lives from the time of occupation until the town’s liberation by Canadian soldiers on 14 May 1945.

The War Memorial in Staphorst was erected in memory of 42 local citizens who died during the years of occupation due to acts of war. One of them was killed in the former Dutch East Indies. The monument also commemorates all Dutch people who were imprisoned in the camps of Beugelen, Conrad, and ’t Wiedegat—three camps located in the municipality of Staphorst.

The memorial was designed by B.K. Haven and unveiled in 1948. At the center of the memorial wall is the inscription: “1940 – 1945 Voor hen die vielen” (1940 – 1945 For those who fell). The annual May 4th Remembrance Ceremony is held here.
