War memorial Schalkhaar

A half millstone, preserved after the war from the burned-down grain mill of the Te Riele family on the Oerdijk, forms the base of the war memorial in the village square of Schalkhaar.

In 2024, the family grave of the miller’s family Te Riele was cleared at the cemetery behind the Nicolaas Church in Schalkhaar. On this grave stood a half millstone (500 kg), originating from the grain mill “De Hoop”, which was set on fire on April 8, 1945, shortly before the liberation. Since the spring of 2025, the half millstone has been part of the monument “In memory of the war victims from Schalkhaar and surroundings and the fallen Canadian liberators”, placed together with an equally sized half made of corten steel.
