Italy Square Monument Diksmuide
There are four monuments on Italy Square (Flemish: Italiëplein): a memorial stone for the Breton soldiers who died in battle, a Canadian liberation monument, a monument for the political prisoners of Diksmuide, and a memorial stone for political prisoner Maurice Cornet.
The Canadian liberation monument stands on Italy Square in Diksmuide. The Belgian city in the Flemish province of West Flanders, was liberated by the Canadian 12th Manitoba Dragoons between 6 and 7 September 1944.
The wooden emergency bridge here was not strong enough to cross the Yser River. Therefore, 70 volunteers helped to build a reinforced bridge so that the Canadian 4th Armoured Division could begin their journey towards Leke, Torhout and the Bruges-Ghent canal. They headed there with a column of tanks on the night of 7 September 1944.
Additionally, during the month of September, British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery had his headquarters in Diksmuide. On 18 March 1945, he was received by the City Council and the Canadian Town Mayor in the Town Hall.
