Western Dock Embarkation Point

Southampton Western Docks Embarkation point was part of many embarkation points around the Portsmouth, Gosport and Southampton area. This embarkation point facilitated the loading of men and vehicles who were taking part in Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord in June 1944

The location of the embarkation point can be viewed from the road but is part of a working port facility. It is currently the are of the Mayflower Cruise Terminal.

The area of the docks allowed for the embarkation of troops, personnel, equipment and supplies. It was recorded that specifically 3 MT Coasters, 6 MT Ships and Stores Coasters, all variants of crafts and ships, used the Western Dock for loading before departing for Normandy, France.

The purpose of the embarkation points was not only for the movement of men and equipment to Normandy. It also received wounded men from Normandy, as well as prisoners of war fighting for the German Army
