North Quay Embarkation, Southampton
North Quay Embarkation point was constructed as part of many embarkation points around the Portsmouth, Gosport and Southampton area. This embarkation point facilitated the loading of men and vehicles who were taking part in Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord in June 1944
The location of the embarkation point can be viewed from the road, but over the years this location has seen regeneration and different uses for the site.
Constructed by Royal Engineers, the embarkation points needed to be firm enough to take the weight of Allied tanks such as Sherman and Churchill tanks. Vehicles, including armoured vehicles, were loaded on to Landing Craft Tanks (LCT) at his specific location. The construction of the embarkation point allowed space for two LCT's to load at the same time.
The purpose of the embarkation points was not only for the movement of men and equipment to Normandy. It also received wounded men from Normandy, as well as prisoners of war fighting for the German Army.
To the northern area of the docks beyond the bridge is a slip used for the repair of Landing Crafts. This is the are where three large concrete cubes are alongside the slip leading into the water.
