Breamore House and Estate dates back over 1000 years, but the house and mansion were completed in 1583. The estate is split in two, with the west half a vast woodland and the eastern side a rolling grass parkland.
In late 1943, the Artillery Air Section of the VII Corps HQ arrived and was based at Breamore Estate. This included part of the estate being used as a small airfield. The aircraft used were small Stinson L-5 Sentinels, which were used by the Artillery unit for observing and spotting. The airfield was in the area opposite the driveway, which now leads to the estate, museum and café, and had a grass runway.
During late June 1944, after the invasion for the liberation of Europe had begun, the US 3rd Army moved to Breamore and used the house as a HQ. This was before the unit's embarkation to Normandy for D-Day. They departed from Breamore around 6 July 1944. The small grass airfield remained in use until around August 1944.
Today, there is a small museum on the estate and guided tours of the house are available. The estate is open to the public to walk around, and there are trails that lead through the woodlands to a small ornamental maze that dates back several century's.
