Community Tree Planting Initiative at the Significant Kalavryta Cemetery

This year marks 80 years since the end of the greatest military conflict and the Kalavryta Holocaust Victims Association, with the support of the Municipality of Kalavryta, will incorporate a community tree planting at the Significant Kalavryta Cemetery into the celebrations of this event. With our initiative, we wish to strengthen our cemetery as a natural place of remembrance and awareness, as it is inextricably linked to the events of World War II and hosts the graves of those 677 men executed by the German occupation forces during the "Mission Kalavryta" and on the fateful day of December 13, 1943, as well as of those women who subsequently saved our population and rebuilt our city. We will plant 80 new cypress trees to replace the old ones. The survivors of the Kalavryta Holocaust—those who were children at the time—are sadly becoming fewer with each passing year. The planting of trees by the descendants of the martyrs is an act of remembrance of the past, of paying tribute to our ancestors, of celebrating the resilience of our people, and of succession of the new inhabitants of our city in the struggle for finding justice and promoting peace. Let us come together to plant roots that honor the past and inspire the future!

The cemetery of the city of Kalavryta is recognised as Significant Cemetery of Europe by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe -ASCE as it is inextricably linked to the modern history of the region.

Located at the northeastern edge of the town, near the Execution Site, it is the resting place of those men executed by the German occupying forces during the massacre of December 13, 1943. It was here that the surviving, mostly women - widows and orphans, dragged the bodies of their loved ones and buried them with their own bare hands. Today, all of these women, also rest in peace in this place.

At the present, the cemetery has become a vital and inseparable part of the local everyday life — a space of memory, prayer, reflection, serenity, and spiritual elevation. It also serves as an important place of gathering and social interaction for the people of Kalavryta, strengthening bonds of fraternity and solidarity and playing a key role in the ongoing management of the community’s collective trauma. Moreover, the cemetery stands as a monument to the resilience of post-war Kalavryta society. Thanks to the titanic efforts of the surviving women of Kalavryta, the community managed to rise literary from the ashes and now thrives in peace.

Join us in this community tree planting initiative, in honoring the past while planting for the future.
Let’s come together to green this sacred space and show our respect through action.

The event will take place within the framework of the initiative: "Cemeteries for a Sustainable Europe 2025: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions" and "Gardens of the 80" of the Network of Significant Cemeteries in Europe - ASCE and will showcase our Cemetery as a place of remembrance that celebrates peace, inclusion, and justice, supporting goal 16 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
