Democracy is under pressure worldwide. Associated values such as equality and freedom of speech are no longer a given. Citizens are losing faith in the government and each other, and increasingly seek refuge with authoritarian leaders. Where does this faltering of the democratic rule of law come from? What are the consequences of these threats to democracy worldwide? And what can we do to revive (Dutch) democracy?
During the 'Fighters for Democracy' conference, led by journalist and programme maker Diana Matroos, we reflect on the future of our democratic freedoms.
The keynote lecture will be given by outgoing Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Hanke Bruins Slot, complemented by contributions from Mayor Ahmed Marcouch and political scientist Andrej Zaslove. Together, they will shine their light on modern threats to Dutch democracy and what is needed to strengthen the democratic rule of law.
The programme will be framed musically by spoken word artist and performer Amara van der Elst. In the panel discussion, we will talk to a younger generation about their ideals and expectations. With publicist Dilara Bilgiç, group follower Wibe Snelting (Volt Arnhem), journalist Eline Huisman (Volkskrant), and military lawyer Captain Dennis Lemmens, we explore why democracy is worth fighting for and in what ways you can do so.
Join us for a chat during this 'combative' afternoon in which different perspectives and possible solutions are reviewed.
The event will be held in Dutch.
