In collaboration with the City of Mons and its alderman, the military vehicles section of the Royal Mons Auto Moto Club, will commemorate, for the 22nd time, on Friday 25, 26 and 27 August 2023, the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the City de Mons by the 3rd Armored Division and the 1st U.S. Infantry Division.
A little history:
September 1944, the Battle of Mons raged for five days in an area ranging from the forest of Mormal to Mons and from Maubeuge to Saint-Ghislain. The remnants of ten German divisions are surrounded following the rapid advance of the American army, combined with the action of the Belgian and French Resistance. The Wehrmacht loses 3,000 men and 20,000 others will be taken prisoner, in what the BBC will call "The Pocket of Mons". This disaster of the occupier will accelerate the liberation of the rest of the country.
For the "Duty of Memory", Tanks in Town will pay tribute to the 89 young American soldiers, as well as to the many resistance fighters and civilians who lost their lives during this battle.
On Sunday 27 August during the Historic Parade, various commemorative stops are planned: in Ghlin at a place called Grand Marais, at the Place de Cuesmes monument, in Givry at the Maquisards monument and Lancaster Crew Memorial, at Quévy at the Château de Warelles, in Mons at the 3ARD and 1ID monument and on the Grand-Place.
