San Cassiano is a hillside hamlet of Bagni di Lucca, located at the foot of Monte Prato Fiorito. In front of the Pieve of San Cassiano di Controni stands the War Memorial for all conflicts, commissioned during the Fascist period to honour those who died in the First World War. It was created by Professor Ubaldo Del Guerra in 1925. The monument features a dying soldier—cast in a copper alloy—on a base of grouped rocks.
After 1945, it was also dedicated to the victims of the Second World War. Several plaques list the names of those killed in Nazi-Fascist massacres (Fabbri Benigno Giorgio, Giannini Domenico, Lucchesi Leo), those who died from remnants of the war (Barsellotti Celestino, Fabbri Giannetto, Giannini Mosè), and soldiers missing in the Fascist invasion of Russia (Bastiani Adelmo, Bastiani Giuseppe, Barsanti Ugo, Fabbri Bartolomeo, Frullani Nazzareno, Giannini Ersilio, Giannini Orlando, Giannini Pietro, Illidi Bruno, Menchini Oreste, Nieri Carlo, Talenti Federico).
The monument was restored in 2017.
