Stützpunkt Scharnhorst
On the Zuid-Beveland side of the Sloedam, several reinforced field positions built from concrete blocks can still be found. These belonged to Stützpunkt Scharnhorst. The Sloedam was the scene of heavy fighting both in 1940 and again in 1944.
Along the Zeedijk of the Jacobpolder, several bunkers remain. One of them has been made accessible and can be visited. It is a troop bunker combined with an emplacement for a light anti-aircraft gun — one of three that once stood here. From these positions, the airspace above the Sloedam was defended against attacks by fighter aircraft.
