Battery von Kleist

Walcheren has several artillery positions equipped with two type 611 gun bunkers. One of these can be found in a meadow along the Verbrandehofweg between Koudekerke and Vlissingen. It is Stützpunkt Von Kleist.

At the centre stand two type 611 gun casemates. These include crew quarters for the gun team and two ammunition rooms — characteristic features of bunker designs from 1942–1943. On both sides, two bunkers of type 669 were constructed, a design dating from April 1943. These represent an early example of the Schartenbauprogramm ordered by Hitler — a construction programme in which simplified gun bunkers were built. These bunkers provided space only for the gun and a small ready supply of ammunition.

The construction method was also modern: wooden formwork was replaced by concrete form stones (Formsteine), which allowed faster completion of the bunkers. The outward appearance of the bunkers changed due to the use of these stones.

Because of the inundation of Walcheren in October 1944, the battery came to stand in water. In time, the troops, supplies and guns were moved to locations that would not be flooded.
