On 31 March 1945, nine members of Zutphen’s resistance were executed by the German occupiers at this location. The victims were: Boxtart, Van Heemstra, Gerritsen, Hartoch, Lammers, Lier, Van Oostveen, Oskam, and Sonnenberg.
A tenth man, Van Benthem, survived. A bullet had struck a button on his clothing and ricocheted. Pretending to be dead, he was thrown into the IJssel River with the other bodies, but managed to swim to safety.
