Liberation monument Almelo

In the center of Almelo stands a Liberation Monument, reminding residents of the city’s liberation in early April 1945 by Canadian soldiers. Commemorations are regularly held there.

On October 3, 1951, the Canadian ambassador P. Dupuy unveiled the monument at Marktplein in Almelo. It was later relocated—first to Koornmarkt, then to Stadhuisplein in 1990, and most recently, after restoration in 2023, to Wierdensestraat. The monument commemorates the days of April 4 and 5, 1945, when Canadian troops liberated Almelo. The column has often served as the site for memorial ceremonies.

Designed by Jo G. Baljet, the monument consists of a column with reliefs and a stone flame on top. The inscription reads:

4/5 April – The Lake Superior Regiment Canadian Grenadier Guards of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division – 1945.
