Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein'
The museum shows how the Battle of Arnhem unfolded. It took place in September 1944 in the area between Ede and Arnhem and was part of the Allied operation ‘Market Garden’. British, American and Polish airborne troops had to occupy the bridges over the rivers from the Belgian border to Arnhem. The museum is located in the former Hotel Hartenstein. This former hotel was the headquarters of the 1st British Airborne Division under the command of Major General Roy Urquhart during the Battle of Arnhem. The hotel was largely destroyed during WWII, but was restored after the war. Since 1980, it has been home to the Airborne Museum. Tourist information Opening hours
It has been home to the Airborne Museum since 1980. The Battle of Arnhem in 1944 is the most famous part of Operation Market Garden. The aim was to occupy the Arnhem road bridge and then quickly push on to Berlin. However, the battle was dramatically lost. The museum lets visitors relive the battle with a presentation featuring authentic objects, film footage and personal documents. In the new underground room, a museum ‘Airborne Experience’ has been built where visitors experience the battle as if they were part of it themselves. Unique in Europe!
