Hitler Youth and the Bund Deutscher Mädel are shown in numerous films, documentaries, books and magazines. You often see boys and girls standing in line in a disciplined manner, marching, doing sports and passing their time in camps. How did young people in the region around Monschau, Schleiden and Euskirchen experience the National Socialist era?

To what extent did the everyday lives of children and young people change in comparison to the Weimar Republic? What points of reference did the National Socialists have from the Weimar period? What content was added to school lessons or disappeared? Was the Hitler Youth an exciting pastime or a chore? What happened to children and young people when military drill became bitterly serious during the war? These and other questions are at the centre of the new special exhibition entitled: "You belong to the Führer too! - Children and young people in the region 1918-1945.

Find out about the school-leaving exams that Euskirchen school-leavers had to answer in the mid-1930s, about schoolchildren in Monschau who had to collect bones during the Second World War and about children who had to dig anti-tank trenches in Hollerath and other places during the final phase of the Second World War.
