On 19 September, at the foot of the iconic John Frost Bridge, history comes to life during Bridge to Liberation—a commemoration event that makes the impact of war and the value of freedom tangible.
In a journey of discovery, Lisette Wellens (WNL presenter) joins Frances Cain in search of the story of her father – Major Robert H. Cain – who was decorated for his heroic service during the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. Together, they visit meaningful locations where memories and emotions intertwine into a powerful tribute to courage, hope, and sacrifice.
Everything culminates in an impressive live show with visual effects and captivating music. The audience is immersed in an experience of war and freedom. Be moved by the beautiful performances of Emma Heesters, 3JS, Janna, Michael Wilmering, and Introdans, accompanied by the Phion Orchestra at the famous Bridge Too Far. Prior to this special story, there will be a memorial service in the Eusebius Church followed by the laying of wreaths at the Berenkuil in remembrance of those who fought for our freedom.

About Major Cain
Major Robert H. Cain VC (1909–1974) was a British officer awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour for exceptional bravery. He served in the British Army during the Second World War. During the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, Cain showed extraordinary courage. As a company commander, he defended a crucial position for days against German tanks and infantry. Despite multiple injuries, he refused medical aid and continued to inspire and protect his men. He personally destroyed several tanks, often using only a PIAT anti-tank weapon or a mortar. He died of cancer in 1974.
