The fire line of the bombing of Nijmegen plays an important role in the commemoration. It shows the aftermath of the fire that spread after the bombing 80 years ago on february 22nd, 1944. Nearly 800 metal plaques bear the names of the victims. On februari 21st, 2024, the people of Nijmegen come together to commemorade the victims by walking along the fire line.
Eve of bombing
Five years ago, the walk along the fire line was held for the first time. Everyone is cordially urged to participate. There are several choirs positioned along the route. Starting is possible at the Molenstraatkerk. The walk along the fire line will end at 21:15 with a singing together of participating choirs and the public on Plein 1944.
The bombardement of Nijmegen
80 years ago, on 22 February 1944, the city centre of Nijmegen was completely destroyed. The bombing came unexpectedly and from unexpected quarters. In the middle of the day, just after the air raid alarm had ended and many people came out of the shelters again. It claimed nearly 800 lives.
