Tragedies at Saint-Symphorien I
Saint-Symphorien is a village southeast of Mons on the road to Binche. On the periphery of 3rd AD operations, it suffered two tragedies that overshadowed the Liberation.
The first took place on Sunday, September 3, at around 8 a.m., when resistance fighters attacked a group of German soldiers on their way to Havré. But the Germans remained combative and the resistance fighters were dispersed. Four of them, who were leading the way, were killed: Gustave De Wilde, José Hennebert, René Joly and Armand Virlet. Their names appear on the monument dedicated to them in the rue de Saint-Symphorien.
